In the late 1980s, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, later Chairman and then President Mikhail Gorbachev acknowledged the stagnation of the Soviet Union's political, economic, and social factors and sought to address it with a number of reforms including that of perestroika (restructuring). This went along with an increased rapprochement with the West. It is also considered a major factor in the ending of the Cold War and the eventual dissolution of the Soviet Union.
