Previously I had already posted what was meant to be a Pokemon Version of Davy Jones. This character is not meant to be taken as another Davy Jokes, but is inspired by him, as well as a couple other things.
In Greek mythology Cancer does not have a major myth, though is usually considered a minor story within the Trials of Heracles, where Hera in her constant effort to oppose Heracles at every turn, sends a Crab to get in his way, Heracles crushes said crab under his foot, and Hera memorializes the Crab by placing it in the stars. In its original Mesopotamian mythology it's role is even less known but it was either depicted as a Crawfish or a Snapping Turtle depending on the version and in Egypt they made Cancer a Scarab Beetle. In each case, the animal representative of the sign was perceived as "pushing" the sun across the heavens, initiating the summer solstice. I decided to go with the Crawfish representation.
The name "Al-Tarf" come from the brightest star in the Cancer constellation also known as Beta Cancri. Al-Tarf is the Arabic name meaning "End" or "Edge" which is properly creepy sounding like being at the precipass to a chasm to the Abyss.
Al-Tarf is the Captain of the Abyssal Pirate, one of the most feared crew on the sea often equated with spirits of damned sailors or demons from below. What makes them especially terrifying is that when they come after your ship you don't see them coming, they don't sail on the sea but beneath it using a rigged up skeleton of a Wailord as a Submersible. Since they are all pokemon that can breath under water they don't care if the ship is no longer functional after they attack, blowing gigantic holes from beneath, killing anybody who tries to flee, and then picking through the remains after it has sunken to the dark ocean depths.
