Started painting something without a plan last night, just laying down colors and seeing where it took me. I ended up with this moody scene of a deer dressed in crimson staring up at a swirling white portal in the sky. Today I thought it would be fun to edit it into a fake book cover, so I painted in some heavy wear and tear effects and added text.
The original painting was done in about 6 hours in SAI as a single layer painting by mouse. This version includes a bunch of edits done in both SAI and Paint .Net to add texture and degrade the image quality to make it look more worn.

Alright to be fully fair, I only went without multiple layers for the original base painting. I absolutely used layers and effects to deform it into a fake book cover :p
There were some hand-painted aspects of that too, though. The weathering on the outside of the page, the sticker, etc, were hand painted. The texture on top was not hand painted.
The original untextured version that was fully on one layer is on here on SubscribeStar at the moment (free public post, shouldn't require an account).
