CHAPTER 18
The next morning, Chakastra filtered through the cell's crowded window, illuminating Brend's pale face. He rose from his cot as he did every day to work out in the prison gym, as was his custom over the past year. His muscles, a little atrophied by the initial inactivity, now tensed beneath his skin, sculpting an enviable figure. With every effort and every drop of sweat, Brend forged not only his body, but also a triumphant return to Khudok.
While he was doing his exercise routine, a Rakshani guard, with the indifference of someone who has seen him too much, announced a visitor. Brend immediately stopped and hurried to the visiting room. Upon arriving, his eyes met the radiant smile of Chakat Sunbeam and the innocent look of hir little son Cashir. The cub, unable to contain hir excitement, jumped into Brend's arms with the agility of a Chakat. The renzar, surprised by the gesture, felt how this tender ball of fur disarmed his defenses.
"Brend, you're looking more... fitter every day," Sunbeam observed, wagging hir tail in satisfaction and pride.
“I feel much better, thank you Sunbeam,” Brend replied, his voice deep but tinged with a new warmth.
Cashir, oblivious to the complexities of the adult world, interrupted with the question that burned in hir childish heart:
“Brend! Will you fight again? Will you be the champion of Khudok again?”
“Cashir was eager to come,” Sunbeam added.
“Heh heh heh... I see that” Bred said as he caressed the little one in his arms. The little one kept purring. Turning to Cashir, he added:
“Well, that depends... Life isn't that simple, little one. But perhaps, with the right time and effort, I can return to the arena.”
“Please come back to the competition!” Cashir insisted, looking at him with expectant eyes.
Sunbeam, sensing Brend's internal struggle, decided to intervene:
“The judge has commuted your sentence, Brend. Starting tomorrow, you will be free on day release.”
The silence that followed was profound. Brend, accustomed to the ups and downs of life, found himself helpless in the face of this stroke of luck. His mind became a whirlwind of emotions: joy, fear, hope and a hint of disbelief were all mixed together inside him.
“What?! This is… unexpected,” he finally managed to articulate. After five years of confinement, freedom sounds almost like an intangible metaphor. Sunbeam, with the empathy that characterized hir species, sensed his inner emotional storm.
“Yes, that’s true. That’s why I came early today. I wanted to give you the good news personally. What’s wrong? Isn’t this what you wanted?” Sunbeam replied, looking at his petrified face.
“It's just that... I didn't think it would be so fast.”
“Honestly, I was also surprised by the decision. I guess your good behavior and your demonstrations of positive change played a role. And the letter Esteban sent to the judge probably also helped.”
“Did Esteban write to the court?”
“Yes. It was a personal move by that guy. I didn't expect it. And of course, he didn't consult me about it either.”
“Wow... Grrr... I don't know what to say…” Brend said a little amazed.
“Brend, so you're going to return to the tournament?” insisted little Cashir with an expectant look.
“It's not that simple, kid. To enter the League, I have to pay an entry fee and I don't have any credits for that right now. First, I have to get at least a part-time job.”
“No problem... I'll give you all my savings, right mom?” said the little boy, looking up.
“Heh, son. You don't have that many credits”, Sunbeam replied, stroking hir little head. Then, turning to Brend, shi added:
“The reintegration program is available to you if you want a part-time job. The pay is not much, but it will be enough to cover your basic needs. Also, consider that you will be spending the night in prison, so you will save on accommodation at least.”
“Hmm, yes, you are right,” the renzar said with a smile. Then, he stood up and carefully placed Cashir on the ground. He walked back in his footsteps a couple of times, while he reflected on his new judicial situation. Cashir looked with his innocent little eyes at the titan-like bearing of his sports idol. After a moment, Sunbeam declared:
“Well Cashir, we have to go. You have to go back to school.”
“Wait…” Brend said suddenly.
“Yes? What is it?” the chakat replied. The renzar, driven by an emotion he could not help, asked something he could never have imagined:
“Sunbeam, can I... hug you?”
The chakat, a smile lighting up hir face, stood up on hir hind legs, merging with Brend in an embrace that transcended species and circumstances. At that moment, surrounded by Sunbeam's warmth and Cashir's adoring gaze, Brend was convinced that he had finally found a ray of hope on his path.
As he walked back to the prison gym, with each step he took, he felt that this new opportunity was not only bringing him closer to his physical liberation, but also to the redemption of his soul.
At Natany’s house, dawn was filtering lazily through the curtains, bathing the living room where she and her friends lay asleep in its soft golden light. The silence, barely disturbed by their soft breathing, was a silent witness to the night of revelry they had just left behind. Suddenly, the shrill sound of Natany’s PADD broke the stillness, shaking the renzar from their peaceful slumber.
Eyes still clouded by hangover, Natany fumbled for the device. Her voice, hoarse and sleepy, echoed through the room:
“Regt? Is that you, bro? What's wrong?”
“Hello, sister! How are you?”
“Well... just waking up” Natany muttered, rubbing her eyes.
“Wow! Grr... Sorry. I didn't think you'd still be sleeping, Natany.”
“Never mind. It was time to get up. How about you?”
“We’re good. Remember that camping trip to Silver Lake I mentioned the other day? We’re going now! In fact, everyone already loaded their stuff into the PTV.”
“I'm glad to hear that, brother.”
“Esteban kept asking if you still wanted to come with us. We're going to have a great time! Like the camps Mom used to take us to when we were kids, remember?”
“Heh, yes I do remember, but I’m afraid I’ll have to decline this time, brother,” Natany replied, her voice tinged with a sadness she tried to hide. “There are… matters in the city that require my attention.”
“Is everything okay, Natany? I can see you're a little worried.”
“Yes, everything is fine, brother, calm down” Natany replied with a forced smile.
“Okay, I'll call you when we get to camp.”
“Good. Enjoy yourselves everyone. Goodbye!” said the renzar, hanging up the call.
Dain, who had already gotten up, sat next to Natany on the sofa.
“How do you feel, dear?”
“Grrr... My head still hurts.”
“I mean the Rakshani.”
“Bad, Dain. I feel terrible. I shouldn't have hit him. I'm a police officer! I must never lose control.”
“Natany, it wasn't your head that was hit, it was your heart. And for you to have done that, you must really have strong feelings for that Gerak.”
“That's irrelevant now, Dain. I have to... I have to talk to him. Apologize. By Grom, he might report me. I shouldn't have drunk so much...”
“Grrr! Let him dare to report you! I'll make it worse...!”
“Cala! Please!” Rhealle exclaimed, calling for her to calm down.
“Natany, it was my idea to go there. And I apologize for that. I didn't know he would be there too” Dain said.
“Nobody knew, Natany,” Rhealle added, sitting across from her.
“Girls, this has nothing to do with you... It's me... I don't recognize myself at all... It's just that I... I've never felt anything like this for anyone... And it hurts... It hurts to know that the person you were going to give your heart to betrays you. I'm sorry…” Natany said and then burst into tears profusely. Her friends, including Sachi, surrounded her and hugged her warmly. They stayed like that for a long time.
Cala, with the cold mind of the Ulkarian, commented aloud:
“Hmm. Maybe you should have hit his girlfriend too.”
"Cala!!!" they all exclaimed in unison.
“Okay, okay. It was just an idea,” she grumbled, shrugging.
“I... I have to go to his house. I need to talk to Gerak, apologize and... and understand what really happened.” Natany sobbed.
“Apologize? Isn't he the one who should explain himself first?” Cala commented, crossing her arms. “Besides, what was he doing dancing in that nightclub!”
"Cala, that's a matter for Natany and Gerak to resolve," Sachi said vehemently.
“Yes, that's true. I'll go to your house immediately” Natany added, straightening her clothes.
“Would you like me to accompany you, my friend?” Rhealle offered kindly.
"No need. Thank you. I'll be fine," the policewoman replied resolutely as she headed for the exit.
Everyone present was shocked by Natany's decision. They never imagined that a night of partying between them would ruin things even more.
As she left her house, Natany noticed that the day promised to be warm. "Ideal for a camping trip," she thought, remembering her family's invitation. As she approached her PTV, she sighed deeply and wiped away her tears once more. As she opened the door, she noticed a shadow approaching.
"Hello, Natany" a voice was heard.
Looking up, the female was stunned.
"¡¿You?!"
In the large PTV that Regthar had procured for the occasion, the family was travelling quietly along the route between Amistad and Lake Silver. In the cockpit, Regthar and Lilethe were making sure that the vehicle was running smoothly. Further back, Doren, Hajo and Esteban were entertaining themselves by observing the landscape. In the background, Sorah and her neighbour Bluma Triny were chatting animatedly about trivial matters.
The atmosphere was relaxed. There were not many PTVs on the highway at that time. They expected to reach their destination in about three hours.
"It's a shame Natany couldn't come with us," Lilethe said to Regthar. Regthar, staring blankly at the road, said:
“I have the feeling that something is wrong with her. And she doesn't want to tell us anything so as not to worry us.
“You think?”
“I know her well, Lilethe. That's why I'm telling you.”
“I see. I just hope it's something she can figure out” the nurse skunk added.
Meanwhile, in the middle seats, Doren whispered in Esteban's ear:
“Hmm... I didn't expect Regthar to invite Bluma on this trip.”
"You still don't like her?" the boy replied.
“If I'm honest, no. she has a very lustful look for my taste.”
“Ah, I see. Are you still jealous about our meeting last time?”
“Uh? Well... I...”
“Come on, Doren. You enjoyed her too, didn't you? Heh.”
“Well, yes. I did. But I don't want to make it a habit to share my clan members with her, hmm.
“Heh heh... I understand. And don't worry. I'm not going to do that... Besides, I love the way you say it... I love seeing you a little jealous of me. I feel loved, heh.”
Esteban! Don't play!” Doren replied, blushing a little.
At that moment, in the back of the vehicle, Sorah was quietly commenting to her neighbor:
“...And that was Dad's offer.
“Oh... I think that's a very good thing for you. I think it would be a positive change for everyone” Bluma said while grooming her fluffy tail.
“You think?”
“Of course! It's not every day you get offered a good job. Besides, these are your parents, Sorah. They're your family. If you ask me, I'd gladly accept the offer and go to Grom. Although... on the other hand, I'd miss them all terribly.”
“Awww, Bluma... “said Sorah hugging her neighbor. The latter, placing her hand on the renzar's swollen belly, added:
“Besides, you have to think about the future of this unborn child. That's the most important thing.
"I know," Sorah replied, still hugging the brown-furred fox.
“Have you told everyone yet? —she asked curiously.
“No. Regt and I hope to announce it during family camp. I just hope Esteban and the skunktaurs take this opportunity well.”
“And you? What do you think, Sorah?” the fox whispered in an inquisitive voice.
“I have... I have mixed feelings... It's too radical a decision to be taken lightly. But I'm not completely convinced yet.”
“Take your time, dear... take it easy... There's no rush, I guess, heh.
"Yes, you guess right," the striped-haired renzar finally said.

There is a lot of hope in this chapter...I like that!
I find myself having lost a lot of respect for Natany and really I hope Gerak-Nee tells her that it is over and they should go their separate ways. Drunk or not she was really gross (making fun of his prosthetic was so not cool). Maybe if she can get her rage sorted out and learn to be a better partner she can try a relationship with someone else.

Drunk or not she was really gross (making fun of his prosthetic was so not cool). Maybe if she can get her rage sorted out and learn to be a better partner she can try a relationship with someone else.
Oh! I stand corrected! Well, that's Cala being ugly again because she punched Relia too. That's my mistake.
But some mistakes are bigger than others. Sucker-punching someone is really dangerous and could be lethal to a person. That doesn't seem to be a quality befitting of a partner, that kind of disproportionate violence. 'cause yet again, Gerak-Nee didn't fight Natany physically. This was a perceived personal slight and did not warrant that. Perhaps I am sensitive to that.

Yes, that's true. It's dangerous. But we're talking about non-human species, bigger and stronger (physically more resistant). I don't think it should be taken so seriously. The Rakshani are resistant and I'm sure Gerak-Nee didn't die from that blow. I find it hard to understand your sensitivity in this sense, is the scene too violent for you?
It's not that it's too violent, it's that it's the kind of violence that's not befitting of a partner, because you opened your heart to them, you were most vulnerable to them. I could see if Natany were attacking someone who was performing the threat of lethal harm. But this is striking your partner with such force. It's domestic violence. And that hurts even more because it hurts the heart too. (Domestic violence takes many forms after all). It's abuse of your partner or prospective partner.
All in all, Brend is becoming a better person and his former hostility has been replaced with humility and remorse, I like this, Sunbeam and Cashir are good people and they have been there for him ever since the beginning, supporting him emotionally and helping him to get through.
Natany really loves Gerak, huh? For her to be so emotionally shaken, it seems her feelings are very intense. By the way, I don’t mean to be rude, but her friend Cala isn’t suggesting very nice things…je je. I know she’s trying to help Natany by sharing some opinions and thoughts, but perhaps a bit less violent? 😅
It’s a nice chapter, thanks for sharing!

Yes, I guess Natany is very aware of what she did (after waking up from her hangover). It's the first time she has feelings for someone. And she acted impulsively and foolishly because she doesn't know how to deal with these new feelings. (I'm not justifying the punch, to clarify) Even though she's an adult, she acted like an uncontrolled teenager. I know several people in real life who are emotionally immature even though they're adults.
They all hated Brend when he almost killed Esteban. But time and willpower transformed their own perception and that of others. Esteban had every right to hate Brend. No one would have blamed him. But the young man did what for many was crazy or stupid: he forgave him and helped him. And that's not easy to do. It takes courage to trample on your own pride and wish good to those who have hurt you. As Vroeg used to say, mistakes are your teachers. Now, everything will depend on Gerak: If his pride is greater than his love for Natany or the other way around... That remains to be seen.
Thanks for readig!

Of course, I can understand why Natany punched Gerak, it was perfectly understandable, I mean, if I experience a new emotion for the first time, like jealousy or fear, then I would be prone to making foolish and impulsive decisions because of the lack of handling experience, je je😅 “Mistakes are our teachers”, I’m sure as wise as hy is, there was a time when Vroeg would be affected by hys emotions and make decisions that hy would later regret or apologise for, like if someone accidentally hurts hys family member. All in all, I respect Natany for wanting to apologise immediately after her previously wrong move! ☺️
And yes, it’s very easy to hate someone, we are not used to letting go of our past experience and sometimes that past experience could stay with us for a long time, so, for Esteban to forgive Brend or his biological father, it TRULY takes courage, especially if you remember every detail of the wrong things they have done to you. For that, Esteban is a good man!
And you’re welcome, the pleasure is mine☺️
