Subterra kobolds are a species made by me a while back that i never used for anything! If you like em, you can make one, they aren't closed -->
They are significantly larger than your average kobold ( average between 4-5 feet whereas kobolds can be 2-3 typically ). While gigantism can be seen those afflicted tend to live DRASTICALLY shorter lives as they are extremely sickly, always sterile, and rarely survive to adulthood. It isn't sure why.
They are a sentient people though the specific behaviors depend on the colony rather than the species as a whole.
Like all kobolds, they worship dragons and tend to know if someone is draconic or not, even if the dragon is currently not representing as such ( for instance, a dragon in human form ). They will almost always listen to the words of a dragon above anyone else, regardless of social rank above present company.
Subterra kobolds were bred bigger and stronger as they are a mining specialty species. Through a very limited magical energy found in their claws, they can shear through solid rock as if it were butter. The claws and horns are often based on a metal, though the metal holds no significance - not in rank, behavior, ect. The metal coating seems to have something to do with their magic because it disappears if they get an injury that affects magical production / they die ect. It's typical to use a subterra to find precious ore, but then use more refined equipment to dig it out, as the kobold is FAR less refined and can damage the ore by trying.
As they can manipulate stone, metal, ect, they can make rudimentary weapons and the like just by shaping it, but as their claws are quite large, they are unable to make finer things as a general rule such as cutting crystals, making small jewelry, so on.
Subterra kobolds are biologically hermaphrodites. They have specialized genitalia that can take on both roles. Its shape is controlled more by muscle flexion rather than arousal so they do not necessarily have to be aroused in order to function as a male ect. To fit in better with society they do generally tend to assign themselves with a represented gender, though bedroom acts do not always conform with the chosen gender.
They are not mammals and thus do not have breasts. To reproduce, they do lay eggs, though the eggs are only fertile if they pair with another subterra kobold. Both kobolds will be impregnated in the breeding process. The eggs are fairly small and the clutches can be up to 15 eggs, with three to four eggs laid per day until done. The shell starts somewhat soft and leathery but would harden after a few days. Subterra have little to no maternal instinct and their eggs are often relegated to different species for their care. They prefer to lay the eggs somewhere warm, where the eggs will be largely self sustaining on their own.
Most successful intercourse will start the process for producing an egg, regardless of the gender role taken during the act and the species of the partner, though the eggs produced from a non-viable breeding ( interspecies, even with other non subterra kobolds, ect ) are always sterile. For whatever reason, the egg tends to be a bit larger, and there is typically only one during such an instance. The shell is quite hard and the egg when cooked has a strange sweet flavor that most would describe as unappealing.
Hatchling subterra kobolds are largely independant. Their first meal is usually their own egg and unhatched nestmates, and after that they would be rapidly learning and growing on their own. Due to the rapid learning process it can be dangerous to talk near eggs as they will remember things heard in-shell. As a result, they are often born fully capable of speaking the native language of the location they are born at. They age faster than humans. By roughly a year old, they are fully adult and mature; due to the nature of mining, a subterra in active service is unlikely to die to old age rather than a mining casualty, but if removed from their environment the life expectancy is significantly higher. Records of some that are at least fifty are heard of but that is quite rare. Twenty to thirty is far more average.
Once adult, they tend to have fairly bad memories. It can be hard to get accurate information if you ask what happened a few days ago. Some individuals will show exception to this.
Wings are fairly common however they are never functional for flight. The fingers are fused into one long bone that keeps the wings somewhat stiff at the ends, and they tend to be very small and moderately heavy. They can fold and function in general winglike ways outside of flight. However, quite a few subterra kobolds seem predisposed to a semi aquatic lifestyle and the wings work very well underwater. All subterra are able to hold their breath for a fairly long amount of time - typically about fifteen minutes.
Horn styles vary a lot individual to individual. They are true horns, rather than antlers. If cut, they will bleed. They are usually fairly small and straight. More than one set of horns is fairly common but there is rarely more than three sets. For whatever reason, the more horns they are, the smaller they tend to be. The horns are not used for any particular purpose.
The kobolds are nondiscriminatory omnivores though they live far more carnivorous if given a choice. They have very strong bite force and little sense of taste, and can even eat very decomposed things with little issue. Some joke that they'd eat rocks if there was no other alternative though this has never been tested.
Due to specific anatomy, they can move equally well both quadrupedal or bipedal, though they are always considered anthro. They tend to keep their hands knuckled over like those of giant anteaters to prevent accidentally scratching something they do not want scratched. This is how they would hold cups, plates, ect. As a result they don't often use cutlery and other things that require fine dexterity.
