I am aware they are also (more correctly) called Chinese Guardian Lions. I did my research before drawing or posting it. ;) However, I decided to label it a foo dog as that is the more common label (and thus more recognisable) in the fandom, and probably the more recognisable label in the west overall.
Your example is irrelevent. People do not commonly look at cougars and think "wolf". It is not a common term in the western world to call a cougar a wolf. However, what you're suggesting is akin to me saying "you shouldn't call it a mountain lion, it's a cougar, that name is misleading".
