I was thinking he could be a slave/prisoner (I think some justice systems do this), so he's stuck with some (unchained) manacles on his arms and feet (better than branding people), he tends to wear something under them so they don't chafe him. They can't be removed until he is free, because I like symbolism. But as I said earlier, he isn't submissively gloomy slavelike.
He could have been punished under entirely false accusations, but I am okay with him actually being a bit bad... at least he gave up any attempt at being good after it happened. He is a real "shit happens" kind of guy, huh.
