Decided to play around with my old Sonic AU and make this little gif of Shadow and Maria interacting.
In my AU, Shadow aged somewhat normally (and is not immortal). When he first met Maria, he was a young child and she was already in her early teen years. She didn't exactly have any friends on the ARK and she knew Shadow would be neglected if she didn't step up and care for him. So, despite her chronic illness and her young age, she served as Shadow's primary caregiver. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, but they enjoyed each others company.
