Prior to the Valley Line opening in 2005, Bonnie Doon Mall (then Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre) did not have a bus station or "transit centre" with buses stopping on street, or using the Connors Road traffic circle to loop buses. As the Valley Line was being built, the traffic circle was ripped out to make way for the tracks. The EMTC knew that a better solution was needed to loop buses in the area, as well as better layover facilities for drivers, and amended the Valley Line construction plans to include a new transit centre at Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre.
Mall management was not keen on the EMTC pushing on to its lot and losing quite a lot of parking in the process, even as the City of Edmonton and Transit presented business cases that the LRT and transit centre would drive far more traffic to the mall. In the end, the City opted to pay Bonnie Doon Centre for expropriation of their lot to build the station.
Services on the LRT line were later expanded in 2010 upon the opening of the Energy Line to Health Sciences/Jubilee via Whyte (82) Ave in 2010 and the Festival Line loop in 2015
