Her father is supposed to look dazed, he's been giving her most of his food and water rations for days, letting her sleep while he did extra watch duty. She's been obsessed with this new quest she's been sent on and hasn't noticed....
i would like to point out how i was using a sort of Cubist technique here, the camera (as it were) being on her and her father on the left side of the picture then pans over to and shifts level and angle to focus on the squire without the use of a panel divider...i'd like to point that out,...but i can't: i wasn't paying attention and the perspective got wonky! ;>
When i started working in real media again a few months ago (after my five year digi-only stint) this ten year old or so pencil drawing was one of the first new inkings. So i wuz a bit rusty, but having fun.
One way of finding characters/stories is to sketch up a panel with some dialogue. Some of my stories started like this, while others, such as Emma and Ash, began with the story, and trying to visualize the how the characters look came later.
This method doesn't always work. "Kalanova '64" was this sort of thing (i removed the thought-balloon for the final art) that didn't lead to any story:

This, at least for now, is another non-starter for any story. It was a bit to similar to the start and general idea of my story of Azha, the bunny who might be a princess or might be delusional and farm-boy. And this basic idea was rather generic RPG/fantasy....
Still, it's pretty picture...maybe one day some story will come from it?

Heee!
i hadn't held a pen or pencil for about five year other than my "Rachel" pic about 9 months before this:
http://lachland-nightingale.deviant.....09064#/d26egqb
around five years of digi-only before that pic...
So this was me coming back to old-school, lacing-up my dancing shoes and trying out a few steps!...
i wanted some detail in the background but the characters left "open" (free of a lot line shading) in case i wanted to take it to a colour version (which still might happen...).

very wonderful work her father looks tired and fatigued so yea ya got his look right every thing is quite beautifully done the knights expression and armor are excellent as well and the maiden.. yea she look oblivious to whats going on with her father its probably gonna hit her hard when she realizes what hes done for her
Yeah, in this proto-story and the Azha story a major theme is about people thinking they know what is going on, who the other people are, only to find out they and others are sort of following their own explanations and stories...stories that don't agree, ideas about each other that seem utterly foreign, etc - Misunderstandings.
i don't think the young squire's going to notice the shimmery diaphanous gown of the pretty temple maiden for some days...he's still seeing his master being torn apart, the pack animals as well. His master wasn't wearing his armor at the time which is why it's intact.
In a week or two dad might have recovered enough to raise an eyebrow at daughter's attempts to comfort poor traumatized boy...
By then they might be into the quest and various adventures....who knows....

i had limited myself to only working digitally for about 5 years - until my comp was in the shop for a couple weeks about 5 months ago...so i cleared off my old drafting table, got out the old pens and pencil art and started doing some new old-fashioned art - this was the first piece i warmed-up on as i knew it wasn't going anywhere as a story, so it didn't matter if i messed-up inking it.
...most of it was done in a day or two, then it languished for some months as i revived work on about 100 other pics -
i'm scattered - i tend to work on any pic for an hour or so, then go over to a different pic.
A few months latter i got back to it - an hour one day, an hour a few days latter...
Really effortless and fun from start of inking to finish. i realized how much i missed doing real media inking...
...and real media painting as well...Now i'm trying to get a painting area set-up on the opposite side of my studio - trying to decide if i want to buy a new easel or build my ideal adjustable easel/desk design...
