It was getting worse. Charlie looked over himself in the bathroom, and now found that the black hairs had spread down his legs and to the top of his feet. Some part of him wanted to cling to a theory that it was still only some weird aftershock of puberty - but no. This had happened so suddenly.
He was at least finding that he could resist scratching at it. It seemed that some of the itching was just getting used to the sensation of having more body hair. Charlie wasn't sure though if he liked the idea of "getting used to it."
This was going on for far too long. He needed to bring this up to his mom and dad, as awkward as it sounded. He got into the shower, doing his best not to think about all the hair, and got dressed. It was finally Friday. He had his geography final today, then a weekend, and then only one week before summer. He was going to make it, and maybe actually do well in his classes, given the study help that Daisy had been doing with him the past few days.
Charlie walked into the living room to find his mom sitting on the couch, reading a home improvement magazine. He sat down and started tying his shoes.
"Hey mom?"
"Yes?"
"This... is a bit of a weird question... but do my arms look... more hairy to you?"
He extended out his arm, and she held his wrist, looking it over.
"No?"
What? No? That hadn't been the response he'd expected.
"But the hair is darker," Charlie said, "and thicker."
Mom made a slight chuckle. "I don't see anything wrong. Now you get off to school, and do well on that geography test."
He gave her a half hearted goodbye as he walked out the door, confused by her reaction.
****
"It's just... not the way that she usually responds to stuff," Charlie said as he closed his locker, "shrugging off something strange like that. Usually it's more the mom thing of needing to insist that a bloody nose doesn't mean I need to go to the emergency room."
The three of them began walking down the hallway. Cooper's face was twisted up in deep thought, his hands in his pockets. Daisy walked on the other side of him with her head down, seeming a bit... distant.
"I don't know," Cooper said. "I know your mom fairly well too, and I agree, that is kind of out of character for her - but people are complicated, you can't perfectly predict how they'll react."
"Well," Daisy said, "one thing I can say at least... it's not just you."
She displayed her arm. It had a number of hairs growing on it - but instead, a pale blonde color, matching her hair. Cooper looked to her, then down at his own arms, which had many brown-reddish hairs.
"I can't really tell if anything is going on with me," he said. "I've always been a bit more hairy."
"The point remains though," Daisy said. "It isn't just Charlie making it up, that doghouse did something to us."
"So what are we going to do about it?" Cooper asked.
They all glanced to each other in silence, seemingly hoping someone had a solution. None of them did.
****
Charlie pushed through the test the best he could. He jumped around, answering the questions he knew best. Somehow, Daisy had succeeded in drilling into him which of the "stan" countries in central Asia was which. He did well enough on the Africa portion of the test. It was so hard to remember where countries like Mali were. He thought it was one of the big ones in the Sahara desert, but he wasn't sure.
The written portion though was his least favorite. He couldn't fudge his way through it by writing something super long and wordy. Slowly he plugged his way through, and finally, he was done and early somehow too. Uh oh.
He flipped through the pages of his stapled test packet, but no, he had indeed answered every question. He flipped through it again to check that he'd gotten everything right. Then he spotted one error - in a map of the Balkan states, he'd forgotten that one really tiny country. What was it... Kosovo! That was right. He went through everything else. He had finished, and it hadn't been nearly as bad as he'd expected.
He walked up to where the TA sat next to a stack of tests, and placed it there. It was over. He was free. Whether he passed or failed the class was now out of his hands. He returned to his seat, and closed his eyes. He scratched idly at his arms, and found himself worrying less about that. Yeah this strange thing was happening, but he had finished geography better than he had expected - all with the help of the girl he had a crush on.
****
"So...," Daisy said at her computer, "I'm still not sure how to do this..."
Cooper walked over to her in-game, where she stood next to their farms.
"It's simple, just put all your organic items into the top chest, and then the hoppers will put it through the composter, and then down into the chest at the bottom, then use all the bonemeal on our crops."
"Alright," she said, still seeming a bit lost.
Charlie was uncertain if inviting Daisy to play Minecraft with them had been a good idea. She'd said that she had an account from playing with her younger sister once, but hadn't touched it in ages. While Charlie had met a few girls who were really into games, he usually assumed that most weren't into it. And part of him still felt a bit self-conscious that she was seeing them playing Minecraft. He liked the game, of course, but for some dumb reason he felt a bit childish telling a girl he liked playing it.
It did help though that a few other people were in the library computer lab playing on the server. Now that the school year was winding down, more people had time to hang out, but that also meant more competition in the server economy. Charlie and Cooper however, were going to corner the market on golden carrots, and get rich in the process. It made Charlie feel a bit devious with how fun it was, that he had seriously approached another server member and offered to purchase their carrot fields for ten whole diamonds, which they had promptly demolished after purchasing. Couldn't have competition.
The gold for the carrots was a tougher problem, but they'd made a deal with a much smarter server member who'd made a gold farm in the nether. They were perfectly positioned to have a near total monopoly. Yes, people could grow their own carrots and get their own gold, or grow other food altogether. But would they really do that when they could buy their food hassle free from little redstone vending machines scattered around the server?
"We need to go full automation," Cooper said, looking over their farm. "We've been harvesting too slow, and it reflects poorly on our reputation."
"Indeed," Charlie smiled, speaking in a very "business" voice.
"Daisy," Cooper sad, "we're going to need a lot of redstone. Can you go mining for it?"
"Like... down in the caves? I'm... not sure."
"Oh they're only creepers," he laughed. "They don't take too much to kill."
"Well I'm not great at the fighting. They've already killed me three times. All I wanted to do was build a house. I guess though... I can do it if you really need me too..."
"What if," Charlie said, "instead I help you build a nicer house? We've got plenty of money to buy building materials."
"Alright," Cooper said, "though his face showed he wasn't looking forward to doing more mining.
Charlie showed Daisy a bit more around the Minecraft server. They and the other server members aspired to make something near the great Minecraft servers on Youtube, and after months of effort, there was an actually functioning economy, with real shops. Unlike some of those Youtube Minecraft servers though, the people running the server had to install plugins to prevent people from outright stealing and destroying people's stuff. The honor system may work among a bunch of friends on Youtube, but it definitely didn't in a high school.
Daisy was much more interested in looking around at all the things people had built than just mining. She was especially impressed with a dragon statue fountain someone had built in the center of the community.
By the time they'd gotten back near where Charlie and Cooper were based, Daisy had made up her mind - she wanted to build a medieval cottage. A bit basic in terms of Minecraft creations, but he didn't mention it. Slowly, Charlie saw her mood improve. She got into her element, wanting to come up with ideas for what rooms she'd put where, how she wanted a grand fireplace in one room, a stable for horses adjacent to the house...
It was a freeing feeling for him. He was showing her little tricks about the game, and she was actually genuinely interested in his advice. She was even impressed. He allowed himself to talk about something he legitimately enjoyed, and he wasn't being made fun of for it.
They had played for another hour, and people were starting to leave for home. Daisy had more restraint than Charlie and Cooper, and logged off as soon as she felt it was getting late. Charlie agreed, and also exited out. As Cooper ran back to their base with more materials from another round of mining, Charlie looked at his student portal - and found a notification. His geography test results had come in - far earlier than he'd expected.
He opened it. Relief washed over him, and he grinned with satisfaction.
"Daisy!"
He turned his monitor to her, revealing the result. 92%.
It was far better than he could've hoped for, and it was all because of her. She offered a hand, and they high fived. He was on cloud 9 as they left the library and walked down to the front door. Cooper talked a bit into thin air about this or that thing with their Minecraft plans, and Daisy obviously was pretending to understand.
Charlie though was off in his own thoughts. He had done it. He had succeeded on his test. More than that, Daisy actually liked talking to him, being around him. Fears and stresses he clung onto for ages felt like they were melting away. He knew that he had a big dumb smile on his face, and some people might tease him for being so cheerful - but he didn't care. He was so happy not only could he smile, he felt like he could dance even dance he was in such a good mood - if he'd actually known how. He could... he could...
As they took their customary shortcut between two of the high school's buildings towards the edge of the school's lawn, Charlie felt a feeling overtake him. He... he felt so... happy...
He slowed behind Cooper and Daisy. He began shaking his bottom. He had no idea why he wanted to, but it made him feel happier. He did it more, even more energetically. The others turned around.
"Uh... Charlie?" Daisy said.
And that was when he felt it. Something was growing back there, and growing fast. It felt so good! He closed his eyes, and pushed. He wanted it to grow, he wanted to feel it -
It burst out. Charlie felt so happy! He wagged it behind him, breathing heavily with his mouth open.
And then he met Daisy and Cooper's shocked gazes. Charlie slowed, and then he stopped. Something... something unnatural had just happened to him.
He slowly craned his neck back. And there it was.
A fluffy black tail with a white tip. It stuck right out of his spine. He looked back to Daisy and Cooper. They had hardly moved.
His breathing began to intensify. He trembled like an earthquake had hit, one that only affected him.
"Charlie...," Daisy said shakily. "What... what's happening?"
"I... I think I know," Cooper said, almost at a whisper.
Charlie looked between them as terror began to overpower him. "I... I'm turning into a dog."

I see that his parents do not see the difference. So, it could be glamour (you have no fur or tail) or reality shift (you alwasy was half-dog). We'll see it later, when more serious changes happened.
For now, he is mostly human and all changes could be hidden easily. What comes next - paws or muzzle? And, I suspect there are their pet dog to a human change also started.
