Legitimately, having practiced canid vocalizations a fair bit... I find it best to express canid sounds less from the mouth itself and more from the throat. Building up the sound in the front of the throat, before 'firing' it out of the mouth. The mouth can help arrange the sound as it exits, but a lot of canid sounds do start in the throat, it feels like.

I've found the most accurate canine noises start in the throat. Kind of in the same way that male vocal training tells you to talk from your chest. For barking, I usually start in my throat and kind of force it out while rapidly opening and closing my mouth

Oh yeah, I forgot about vocal training for singing also recommending similar techniques! Yes, you just get a stronger and more sustainable sound this way, and I think it's a lot better on fatigue too? (It is why dogs can bark for so long and loudly lol.)
Same for barking for me, I just kinda do a harsh exhale after building the throat-noise, going from closed to quickly-open mouth.
