Chapter 3: Strange Happenings
Indigo was fast asleep in his bed when his cell phone rang on his nightstand. He slept through the first couple of rings, but by the third he sleepily lifted his hand over to the nightstand, fumbled around a bit, found the phone, and brought it to his ear. “Hello?” he managed to get out.
“Um, hey, it’s Cameron. You said we should talk if anything strange happened, right?”
“Do you have ANY idea what time it is?”
“It’s 3:00. I know. I think this is a little more important, though, see, I was in bed and-”
“Cameron, whatever it is, I’m SURE it can wait until tomorrow morning.”
“NOT IF I’M A ****ING FOX!!!”
“…Say that again?”
“I’m a ****ING FOX!!! I’ve got a bushy red tail and pointy ears on my head, man! Tyler’s here too and he’s a ****ING CHEETAH!!! What the **** is going on?” A sudden beeping came from the phone over the talking.
“Cameron, hold on, I’ve got someone on the other line.” He clicked “Answer” and put the phone back to his ear. “Hello?”
“CHANGE ME BACK NOW YOU MOTHER****ER!!! I KNOW YOU’RE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS!!!”
“Who is this?”
“IT’S JACOB YOU ****ER!!! YOU ****ING TURNED ME INTO A MOTHER****ING WEREWOLF!!!”
“Wait, you’re a wolf? And what is with all the swearing?”
“I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU ****ING DID IT, BUT CHANGE ME BACK RIGHT NOW YOU MOTHER****ER!!!”
“Can you hold on for a second? I’ve got someone on the other line.”
“NO, YOU LISTEN TO ME YOU MOTHER-” Indigo changed back to line 1. “You still there?”
“Yeah, who was that anyways?”
“Yeah, that was Jacob. Apparently he turned into a wolf.”
“This is getting ridiculous! What the hell is happening?” Suddenly, Indigo’s home phone started ringing. “Hold on a second, someone’s calling my house. And I have a good idea of who it might be.” Indigo picked up the phone and put it to his ear. “Hello?” he said cheerfully.
“Um, yeah, Ryan? It’s Richard. Something really weird happened and-”
“And you’re both animals, I know,” said Indigo, “Welcome to the party.”
“So it’s not just us? What’s going on, man? I called your cell phone, but it was busy.”
“Yeah, Jacob and Cameron are on the line, too. Hold on, I’m gonna switch over to Cameron now.” He put his cell phone back to his ear. “That was Richard and Ryan. Apparently they’re animals, too.”
“I’ll tell Tyler. Hey Ty, apparently Ricky and Ryan are animals too.” Indigo could hear a loud F-bomb dropping in the background. “Yeah, he’s not too happy,” said Cameron.
“I can hear that. I’m gonna switch over to Jacob.” He clicked the second line.
“WITH A ****ING PIG!!! YOU HEAR ME SILVERS?”
“Yeah, I hear you loud and clear. Apparently Cameron’s a fox, Tyler’s a cheetah, you’re a wolf and Richard and Ryan are animals too. Can you hold on? I’ve got to switch over to Richard again.”
“GET BACK ON THE PHONE YOU MOTHER****ER!!!” Jacob was still screaming through the phone as Indigo put his house phone back to his ear. “You still there, Richard?”
“Yeah, who was that screaming though the phone?” asked Richard.
“That was Jacob. Apparently he turned into a wolf. Also Cameron’s a fox and Tyler’s a cheetah.”
“Yeah, and I’m a hyena and Ryan’s a white tiger. What did you turn into?”
“A psychological mess.” His house phone was beeping now. “Hold on, someone’s on the other house line. I have a peculiar feeling it’s Andray.” He clicked line two for his house. “Andray?” said Indigo through the phone.
“Um, how did you know it was me?”
“Because Cameron’s a fox, Tyler’s a cheetah, Jacob’s a wolf and won’t stop swearing, Richard’s a hyena, and Ryan’s a white tiger. What did you turn into?”
“Uh, a lion, but you didn’t say what happened to you.”
“I got woken up at 3 in the morning to find out six people transformed into animals. Listen, I’ve got five other people on the line right now freaking out, and I need to get us together to figure out what’s going on. Is there any place that works for you?”
“Can you give me a second on that?”
“Yeah, in the meantime, I’m going to switch over to Richard and Ryan.” He pressed for line one on his house phone. “Richard, you still there?”
“Yep.”
“Okay, so apparently Andray’s a lion. I’m gonna get us all together to try and figure out what’s going on. Is there any place that works for you?”
“How about we just meet up at Ryan’s house? I’m already crashing here and everyone’s already pretty nearby.”
“Works for me, I’m too tired to argue. I’ll tell the others. Can you give me the address in a second?”
“Yeah, I’ll let you go for now.”
“Thanks, I’m switching back to Jacob. Hopefully he’s sworn out.” Indigo put his cell phone back to his ear. “Jacob, you still there?”
“YEAH I’M ****ING HERE, TELL ME HOW TO CHANGE BACK!!!”
“Listen, Richard’s a hyena, Ryan’s a white tiger, and Andray’s a lion. We’re all gonna meet up at Ryan’s house. That sound okay? You can ask me all the questions you want to when we get there. I’m switching over to Cameron now.”
“GET BACK ON THE LINE YOU STUPID-” He switched his cell phone to line 1.
“Cameron?”
“Yeah?”
“Okay, so apparently Richard’s a hyena, Ryan’s a white tiger, and Andray’s a lion. We’re all meeting up at Ryan’s house to discuss. Be there.”
“Sounds good, we’ll take Tyler’s car since he drove over here.”
“Okay, I’m gonna hang up and switch over to Richard.”
“Sounds good. See you there.” Indigo hung up his cell phone and switched over to his house phone. “Richard, hold on, I’m going to switch over to Andray to tell him what’s going on.”
“Okay, I’ll hold.” Indigo switched to line 2. “Andray, you there?”
“And waiting. I was thinking we could meet up over by the shopping district so I can get myself some new clothes. None of my outfits are gonna fit right with this stupid tail in the way now!”
“Yeah, no. We’re all meeting up at Ryan’s house. I’m gonna tell them everyone’s on their way.”
“Catch you later!” Andray hung up the phone. Indigo switched back to line 1. “You still there?”
“I’m getting used to this by now.”
“Tell me about it. Okay, everyone’s on their way and so am I. Could you give me the address?”
Half an hour later after Indigo managed to sneak out the window, everyone was gathered at Ryan’s house. When Indigo walked through the doors, he thought he had walked right into the middle of a zoo exhibit. Numerous animals were sitting on the couches, some with their heads in their hands, others consoling each other. Sitting at the far end of the room was a gray wolf with a glass of juice in his hand, or at least that was what Indigo presumed the yellowish liquid was. His hands clutching the glass were somewhat humanoid, having four fingers and a thumb, but had claws protruding from where his fingernails should be. He was wearing some tattered clothing, as were all the animals, but Indigo noticed that his body had become very well toned. His head was completely that of a wolf’s, with a hand placed over his black nose. He glanced his piercing green eyes in Indigo’s direction and Indigo turned his attention to the others. A cheetah and a fox were sitting together opposite of the wolf, talking about what a crazy night they had, as Indigo could make out. Both their ears had migrated to the top of their heads; the fox’s were pointed while the cheetah’s were more round. Both had decided to take off their shirts, as they were becoming a hassle to wear on their bodies in their tattered condition. Indigo noticed their chests had full pectorals and abs, much like a human’s. Sitting next to them was a lion, full mane hanging partially over his eyes. He looked as if he had just cried, as his green eyes were red around the edges and slightly puffy. He took a tissue in his hand/paw and blew his elongated muzzle. Sitting next to the wolf was a brown hyena and a white tiger, wrapped in each other’s arms. The tiger’s tail was wrapped around his leg, and both were looking at each other for comfort. The hyena gave the tiger a short kiss, which seemed to calm the tiger down somewhat. Finally, the tiger looked over at Indigo with his crystal blue eyes. Indigo felt a slight twinge when he did so. “Oh thank god you’re here,” said the tiger, “we have no idea what is going on anymore. First we all get struck by lightning and now we’ve been transformed into these freaks! What are we going to do?” Indigo centered himself and walked over to the couches. “Okay, first off, we’re not going to panic about this,” said Indigo. He thought he saw a branch move in the window opposite him, but he shrugged it off and continued. “I’m going to research the phenomenon that happened and get to the bottom of this.” The fox looked at him questioningly. “I’m one of the highest ranked students in my class, and I’m number one in my science classes. I don’t see any of you jumping up to research this, no offense. The first thing we’re going to need to do is collect some sort of control DNA from places you’ve been. That means looking through clothes, looking at used coffee mugs, things like that to try and get some kind of trace DNA off of them. Then I’m going to analyze those samples and use them as a control. After that I’m going to get samples from all of you currently and try to figure out what mutation might have caused this. And HOPEFULLY that will reveal some answers as to what happened here. I don’t know how long this will take, but for the time being it’s the best plan I’ve got. I’m going to figure out what happened here if it kills me!” Everyone was a little more confident, but was still doubtful. “I like puzzles,” Indigo finally said, “This is like a huge puzzle for me. What happened during the initial lightning strike and what happened to transform you into these… these…”
“Furries?” the wolf finally chimed in.
“I was trying to say anthromorphs, but yes. Furries. Those two events are probably worthy of a Nobel Prize, and it would completely upturn the research of the genome project! This could be the key to understanding the entire human body as we know it!”
“So you’re doing it for the glory?” said the wolf.
“Well, yes, but I’m also doing it to help you as well. I can’t just leave you guys like this! That would be completely inhumane. I’m going to try and research the phenomenon-” as he was speaking, the window behind him shattered. Men were suddenly swarming the house, guns in hand. They fired off shots at the six on the couch, all of whom immediately collapsed. Indigo at this point was freaking out, holding his hands over his head, lost as to what was happening. The men were talking into radio transceivers on their uniforms, and the front door opened. Three men dressed in black suits walked into the house and over to Indigo. They flashed some badges at Indigo. “Good evening, sir, I’m General Andrew of N.E.S.A. I’m here to inform you that the six men behind you are now in the protective custody of the United States Government.”
“Protective custody? N.A.S.A.? What does this have to do with space?” Indigo managed to blurt out through his panic.
“No, sir. We are N.E.S.A., National Extraterrestrial Sightings Association. We received strange reports of lightning strikes within this vicinity and were instructed to move the victims into protective custody of the United States Government. I’m going to have to ask you to hand over any information regarding the incident as well as any contact information you have regarding the six gentlemen across from you.”
“I’m sorry, but I have absolutely no idea what’s going on right now, but I’m pretty sure you just SHOT all of them!”
“They were tranquilized. Sodium Pentothal. They’ll be sedated for the next couple of hours.”
“I’m pretty sure this breaks some basic constitutional rights. Breaking and entering? Assault and battery? Unauthorized use of firearms? Disturbing the peace? Shooting innocent bystanders? I’m sorry, but you’re clearly at fault here and I’m going to be pressing charges regarding this incident.” One of the men in suits nodded his head and Indigo found a dart lodged in his neck. He investigated the shot and looked back at the men before keeling over. “Bring him along too,” said General Andrew. The men scooped up the seven bodies and loaded them into a black van outside. The troops drove off. The men in suits looked around one last time and followed after the other men.

Yeah, I know it sounds a little rushed. I knew that was going to be a problem when I started this project. It's going to slow down a little once I have the main premise set up. I essentially tried to build my inventory for the story a little too quickly. And thanks so much for reading!
