If you don't mind the suggestion; since Ian's fighting style is so reliant on his cursed paw, it might be fitting to give the sword more extensive hand protection. A basket hilt or cup hilt to protect the paw, or maybe the energy that surrounds the sword's physical blade could also wrap around his paw to protect it from getting sniped in a fight. Just some thoughts that came to mind!
