Knowing he has to fight monsters too strong for humans, Edward must use Kiyoshi's magic to stand a chance. Changing into a beast isn't easy—Edward endures near-intolerable pain throughout the spell. To help ease his suffering and prevent his developing instincts from taking over, Kiyoshi uses his healing to dull the pain, making Edward's transformation far more bearable.

But there's a tradeoff.

For a rookie spellcaster like Kit, using two spells at once means the effects of both spells take longer than usual. As a result, Edward must endure his body slowly changing into a werelion before searching for Phillip's henchmen each night. Fortunately, as time passes, Edward will grow more accustomed to this spell and won't need Kit's healing for relief. Eventually, Kit's spellcasting will become so effective that Edward's Beast Change will be instantaneous.
