A bit of Meatware psychology 101: Meatware products are controlled by different means. Since they are still mostly human, they require some means of keeping them under control and enticing them to fulfill their functions.

For servant types like D., the units will be entinced to perform well. A good servant will be treated better, so performance means reward on its own. For soldier and killer types, it's tougher. How do you motivate someone to throw away one's life, without getting much in return except an early death? The solution was to utilize another aspect of the human psyche: Faith.

Assassin models like these are drilled like cult members. They're told from early age that their minds are trapped in a virtual world. Their minds are put only temporarily into the bodies they inhabit, once their body dies, their mind will return to this prison world, only to be reinstalled into the next body. Repeat cycle. The only thing that will give them salvation is to carry out their duties. If they perform well enough, their mind will be freed of the servant cycle, and be allowed to be put into a free body.

These are all lies, of course, but that's how faith works. Giving the hopeless hope. Some units see through this charade, but most will follow this indoctrination blindly.
