The ninth challenge was a maze that was set up on the Fire Planet. John wanted to go with Herman as usual, but because the bear had worn very tight shoes for eight competitions, he had rubbed his ring toe and now had a blister. Louis and Theo discouraged John from going with them, for they would manage on their own, but the latter, having made himself a bandage on his toe, replied, ‘I can stand it, for I must be strong! I am a man!’
And, enduring the pain, he went with Herman. Louis sighed.
‘You are a man, that is true, but sometimes even strong-minded men need rest,’ he said.
‘When did you get so smart?’ wondered Theo. The deer looked at the panther.
‘The day John gave me a second chance,’ he replied.
