Unfortunately yes. They are very protective of their personal space when it comes to being touched. This just due to how ticklish their exposed parts have become.
Aside from general greetings with the hands and needing to squeeze through general crowds, they only let people they trust into their personal bubble.
You can always ask for permission though, and if they like you enough, they may say yes!
