Zander was initially created to fill in the role of a hero in peril. As I grew more interested in integrating his story with Hannah I saw him taking on traits of a battle-traumatized mercenary. Similar to Hannah he found himself captured multiple times and at the mercy of villains. Often times he was toyed with. To me though at his core is someone struggling with himself the most. The perils he finds himself in is because he's running away from something else. Could it be a situation waiting for him at home? Or perhaps feelings he isn't comfortable with. Maybe there's an upcoming disaster he doesn't know how to prevent.
Whatever the case he falls quite easily into the follower role. Thanks to Hannah's impromptu declaration of leadership, Murphy has taken comfort in finding a role in this world that's simple enough to follow... For now.
