WE ARE BACK! Finally kicked my writer's block for another part of this ongoing story. This part sets up for some more dramatic occurrences happening soon. Enjoy!

Kyron rubbed his eyes as he tried to keep focus on the road ahead. It was already night and there wasn't an exit for the past ten miles. On either side of the lonely highway was forests while the highway was dotted with a street light every quarter mile or so. Kyron looks behind to see Claire and Alexis still asleep, his phone buzzed when he looked back to the road ahead. It was Belle again, he tapped his ear piece.
"About time. Where is this secondary entryway I'm supposed to see?" he said, wasting no time.
"Hello to you, too," Belle replied. She sighed, though she knew Kyron had been waiting quite a bit now. "I have a lock on your car and it's a good thing I ringed you when I did. You're gonna see what looks like a service road exit to your right in about a mile. It is lit, there's a sign that just says "exit", you can't miss it,"
"That's it, huh? Well, this job has been eventful enough. I'll contact you once I'm at the drop off point," Kyron says, then tapping his ear piece and ending the call. His right ear twitched, Kyron had been on edge ever since the incident from the rest stop. While he had carried out similar jobs before, this felt different. He already knew he was sucked into whatever what going to happen after Alexis was dropped off. He looked down, tapping on his phone's screen. 10:30pm, looking back up he saw the green exit sign lit up by the car's headlights. He checked his mirrors for any cars that could be seen behind him, but only darkness filled the mirrors' reflections.
He turned onto the exit, which went away from the highway. It was a one lane road going through the woods, small lights on the edge of the road were the only sources of light as he drove onwards. He flicked the high beams on, more of the forest and road were lit up but further down he could see what looked like a gate. Slowing down, he saw there was a camera perched atop one side of the gate's supports. On his left, a keypad on a stand that was the same height as the car's window. His phone buzzed again, he tapped his ear piece.
"Talk to me," he said, less stern than before.
"That keypad you see? You need to enter a four digit number. 7261, the gate will open then close after you drive in. The road will go downwards and you will see an entrance. That's the last leg of your trip," Belle said.
As Kyron rolled down his window, he asked Belle a question. "Wait, what do you mean last leg of the trip?" he said, the annoyance in his voice was noticeable. He quickly punched in the four digit passcode, pulling his hand back into the car as if somebody was waiting to snatch it.
"I can't say much, but this is a safe and concealed route for you to take. That incident from before? Well, while that cop didn't recognize you, he noticed your car instead. Cops loyal to him were crawling around for you ever since we were able to let him go. You were already long gone but the cameras in that food court, they are trying to get footage from the security system. The quicker you get them to where they need to be, the better. You'll understand when you arrive," Belle said.
"Wait, what about the entrance up ahead then?" Kyron asked, but he didn't need to answer as the reinforced door opened. Inside, the road continued down a well lit tunnel. It reminded him of the tunnels from the city he used to visit years before moving away. He drove along, the reinforced door closing behind him. The tunnel curved to the left, feeding into what looked like a small highway. It was empty, but there was what looked like a toll booth ahead before merging onto this underground highway. The booth was on his left, inside he saw a worker. He rolled down his window, "Hey, this some sort of toll?" he asked.
The worker shook their head. "No, but I was told somebody is coming through. Your car matches the description given to me, you Kyron?" they asked. Kyron nodded, "Yeah, this some sort of private tunnel?" he asked.
"Yeah, somethin' like that. You're going to the Fenton place, they funded this all to be built. This highway ends at a big parking lot, it's like an underground entrance to their place. It's about a half hour away, you'll find another booth when you get there, I'm gonna radio ahead about you," the worker said. The small gate raised out of the way, Kyron nodded to the worker as he drove away.
The underground roadway was two lanes wide each way, rows of yellow tinted fluorescent lights lined the ceiling of the tunnel as he drove along. The road curved back and forth, the furthest Kyron could see at any point was roughly a quarter of a mile at best. Looking behind, Alexis and Claire were still asleep. Claire had leaned onto Alexis's shoulder while Alexis leaned against the right side door. Kyron looked back to the road, the empty yet well lit tunnel road made him feel uneasy. The condition of the tarmac was immaculate, he couldn't tell if the road was either freshly done or barely used. The yellow and white lines painted onto the tarmac still gleamed untarnished, unused, too perfect.
With another long, easy left turn, the tunnel road started to go downward. The angle was not steep but enough to be noticed, but now the road was a straight shot forward. Kyron could easily see at least two miles or so down the tunnel road. Further down the road, the walls seemed to widen and the ceiling no longer followed the road. Ahead, what looked like an entire building front and parking lot. Just as the other worker said, another booth lay at the end of the road. Ahead in the parking lot, only one vehicle occupied it, parked as close to the entrance as possible. Kyron drove up to the booth, another person greeted him.
"You must be that Kyron I heard about. Go ahead and park near the entrance. Park behind the other sedan there, its honestly the only car that ever sits here," he said.
Kyron looked over then back to the worker. "That your car I'm guessing?" he asked.
"Nah man, I actually park on the surface. I just take the elevator down here for every shift. This road is exclusive, man," said the worker with a smirk.
Kyron nervously smiled back, then nodded. The gate slid open and Kyron drove through. The building front was at least ten stories high. A few floors seemed to have windows, but the architecture of it had the feeling of an office building, though outdated by a few decades. He pulled in behind the lone sedan in the lot, the strange liminal feeling of the tunnels was very apparent here as well. Clean, well lit and maintained but empty and devoid of any activity. Kyron knew the place was secure but he still felt something amiss.
He put the car in park and turned it off. As he opened his door, the interior lights caused Alexis and Claire to stir awake. Claire rubbed her eyes, Alexis yawned. Kyron shut the car door behind him, the heavy metallic thud echoed through the massive cavern. Even simply walking echoed throughout. He looked though the left rear door, Alexis and Claire were still waking up and getting their bearings. Kyron started to relax a bit as the emptiness of this place reassured they were all in fact alone. At least for now.
"Claire, you ready?" Alexis asked, Claire nodded.
Kyron turned his head when he heard the passenger door finally open up. The two girls stepped out, looking around at the massive place they arrived to. Kyron popped the trunk of the car, the sound echoed throughout, Claire's ears perked up as she took noticed of just how loud it echoed. Alexis wasted no time grabbing her two bags. Claire didn't have much, though Alexis did pack some things for her. She slung the smaller knapsack over her shoulders and handed the other bag to Claire. She smiled at her, even though she was tired, she still wanted to make sure Claire felt like things were going to be okay.
Claire smiled and nodded, she slung the bag over her left shoulder as they both looked to Kyron. He smirked, "Well, guess we better head in,"
The elevator entrance was right in the middle of the face of the old looking office building. Nothing else on the ground level could be seen, no doors or windows. The first rows of windows started roughly several stories up, Kyron didn't even want to start to think about how lonely it felt to patrol, maintain and exist in this space. By the elevator door was one, shiny arrow button that pointed up. He pressed it, as it gave a satisfying click. But with no hesitation, the elevator gave a ding as the doors opened up. Nobody was inside, but the elevator car was already waiting at the bottom for them.
They all made their way inside, though Kyron suddenly realized he had no idea what floor to go to. As the door closed, the crude screen on top of the buttons lit up: "20 - GL"
Kyron narrowed his eyes, his first guess was GL stood for ground level. But being 20 stories deep underground made him wonder just how big this facility really was, let alone where he was going to go from here. His part of the escort was just about over, he mulled about it to himself as Alexis and Claire stood quietly, looking about and not knowing what to say. As he sighed, he was about to ask them something when the doors opened up before he had the chance. They were greeted by a short, older ferret woman. She wore a sweater and jeans, her face lit up as her eyes met Alexis.
Alexis gasped.
"Mom,"
