Slime Mold encounter
Recently I encountered a slime mold plasmodium on a rotten trunk. Why did I use the singular noun to refer to it?Because what you see is actually a single cell!Yes,slime mold cells sometimes fuse together to form a large cell with multiple nuclei(kind like your skeletal muscles)
As you may know, these interesting beings can from complex network to optimize food transport throughout the plasmodium. It is believed to be achieved by some sort of genetic algorithm:first it spread like a spider web to encounter all the food sources around and form several pathways to transport the food. And pathways that are efficient will be kept, and those less efficient one will degenerate.I haven't done research on the cellular mechanism of this behavior, but it it really fascinating to see a single cell able to accomplish this.
