I wonder why Marquez has that smirk and Pointer's looked annoyed?

The first time I drew Jones, Marquez, and Pointer together as a trio, it was to experiment with using more than one graphite value. Before that piece, I predominantly used one pencil. My go-to was a set of Pentel Twist-Erase mechanical pencils: 0.5, 0.7, 0.9. I believed my drawings lacked a certain depth and variety in texture because of that.

So, out of curiosity, I drew another trio, but this time, with a single pencil 0.5mm Pentel Twist-Erase pencil. I learned that my overall control, line neatness, texturing, and even tonal range out of that pencil improved since then, but it also confirms that it is hard for me to just use a single value, let alone a "fineliner" size of lead, to get good depth.
