I read recently about a plan approved by some local or state government where the power company can come into your home, replace all of your light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs, charge you twice the market price for them, and then, to add insult to injury, charge you extra because they now have a loss of revenue due to your reduced electrical use.
That was FirstEnergy in Cleveland back in 2009. You had to pay for the lights but you didn't have to use them. Sad thing though is they cost more than what you would save in the reduction of electricity. They just revised and passed it again in march. This time the whole program is optional. You still have to pay more a month for using less electricity. I saw some people have to pay near 20 dollars for gas even though they never used any.
Just another reason we were better off with a true free market and frown on the government from getting in the way of competitive pricing.
