If you believe the hype, all little girls are supposed to want a horse for their birthday. Well, Ciara's one little girl who actually got one, though not quite in the way she was expecting. Most little girls don't spend their twelfth birthday on the run with all they own in a pack, while everything they've ever known is destroyed in a siege. Lucky for Ciara, she didn't get just any ordinary horse. Embarr is quite bright, for a stallion, and he was trained to be a king's war horse. Ciara has long suspected he's just as intelligent as she is, and he's certainly smart enough to take his job as her protector very seriously. Nine years later, their friendship is as close as ever and Ciara, now trained as a farrier, does her very best to look after Embarr in return.
Embarr does have a streak of mischief in him, though, and however intelligent he may be, he's still a horse. I commissioned this picture because I wanted to get Embarr drawn, but it's also, partly, in memory of the horse I had when I was growing up. He was a little white gelding, and about as much Embarr's polar opposite as you can get. But I did love him, and I did try to look after him. He was rather spoiled, really, and he had this habit of begging for treats by grabbing your shirt tail and tugging. Or he'd try to stick his nose in your pocket. So that's why Embarr has Ciara's shirt in his teeth.

I'd originally thought to title this "Friendship Tastes Like Cotton", but there has been such a proliferation of ponies since I commissioned this people would think I was making a bad joke. Which I was, but not quite like that.

Aw, I'm so glad you like it so much. It really is a cute picture and I've wanted to get more art of them together for the longest time. Embarr is such an important part of Ciara's life, after all, and he is a character I'm immensely fond of. He is rather cheeky at times, that's certain. Rather like his mistress, in fact. But there's no doubt at all that Ciara loves him and is very glad of his friendship and his company.
I was kind of tempted to go with the original title anyway. But I thought this picture deserved to be taken a little more seriously than that. Though, actually, I hadn't heard of the new Pony cartoon until after I commissioned this.

Aww, this is just absolutely adorable! Retro definitely did a very good job at capturing the bond of friendship between Ciara and Embarr which started on this day when she got him, and the cute little touch of mischief that is part of Embarr's personality. I'm real glad to see you got another opportunity to get such a lovely picture drawn with Embarr in it!
*giggles*
And I like that original title, too... I've always wondered what friendship tastes like!

It is a cute little picture, and well worth the wait. Embarr should actually be rather larger. He's 6 feet tall at the shoulder, while Ciara's only 4'9". But that's just details. The emotions in this piece are what really count and she did a wonderful job with showing their friendship, and the bond they share. *Grins* It should come as no surprise that Embarr has a streak of mischief in him, either. Just look at who he hangs out with!
Oh yes, I certainly agree. It does look a bit as if Embarr is too small, but you could say that they're both just still very young in this picture And like you said, what matters in this picture is the lovely display of happy emotions and the bond of friendship they have.
*giggles softly and winks, playfully poking out her tongue*
And indeed, it's no surprise at all that he has a streak of mischief in him, not only due to who he always hangs out with, but also due to who created him!
