Wow...I don't think I've ever done a pic with multiple light sources, but looking at this, I think I can work out how you did it.

Each light source/highlight pattern is on a different layer. Then I changed the opacity of those layers in time to fade them in and out :)

Jeez....I hadn't thought about the changing the opacity. Still, this'd be interesting to try out.

indeed! i miss making teaching example for classroom situations.

Oh I can definitely imagine missing that. Trying to explain something you think you know makes you really firm up your knowledge of it in some wonderful ways.

And it occasionally makes you reflect on how far you've come, knocking out a figure and shading it like this feels like something I could do on complete autopilot at this point in my career, but I know that fresh-out-of-art-school me would have had to work SO much harder to do it.
