Finished character vignette (no background) for raptorbane! I figured if I could fly just by noodling my body around like Eastern dragons, I'd be thrilled about it too! WHOOSH!!

I'm sorry for the late reply, I was wondering if you meant cast shadows (as in shadows cast by objects) or the shadow core/edges of the figure in general. XD The only cast shadow in this picture is the one on Raptor's muzzle cast by the whiskery thingy, which is a pretty sharp shadow, so I'm pretty sure you're talking about just shadow edges in general.
I see what you mean! I really like soft edges shadows that really round out an object and create a sense of a 3D object in space. I see a lot of soft (often high key) airbrushy digital art from other artists that I REALLY like! But I always want it to have more of a light direction and actual shadows than usually appear on that style of coloring. So I try to get that in my own coloring, preserving that soft rounded look I really like while creating a more believable lighting scenario. But I think you're right that things sort of pop less when the only hard edged thing in a picture is the line art. I didn't even notice I was softening things up as much as I was, and I'm super glad you pointed it out! I'll have to pay more attention to shadows and try some sharper edges in the right places. Thank you! =D

Ah yeah I see it on little places like the horns and shadows on the face and ears, now that I look again. It looks really nice tho, and it feels like there should be more harder edges on some places on the body, or at least a variation of hard to soft edges. It seems like on the body, the shadows are all the same amount of softness, even tho I see you making harder edges on parts like the heels and feet.
I totally see what you mean by trying to retain those soft edges and making things look 3D, that is one thing I have always admired about your coloring, it always looks like you really know form and shape, and you can really make the character look alive, even when it's in a not-so-realistic style. But the frustrating thing about all the soft shadows on the body is that it makes my eyes kind of blur and while you render the overall shapes beautifully, I can't pick out anatomy definition unless I really focus (it kind of blends in).
Anyway, I am glad you understand what I mean, I love your work and this was just a little thing I wanted to mention to you to see what your explanation was.
