CHAPTER 14
Brend's heart began to race unusually. Seeing Esteban again after everything that had happened between them made him nervous. Through the bars, he observed the small figure of the human, though he felt uncomfortable looking at his face. Esteban, sensing his unease, decided to approach. Brend instinctively stepped back. He was surprised at himself, not understanding why his body was reacting this way.
Suddenly, the human extended his hand through the bars and said:
"Hello. Aren't you going to greet me?"
The renzar was speechless for a moment. His nervousness increased to the point of desperation. He wasn't used to feeling cornered in an encounter.
"Please, don't come closer," he finally declared, head bowed.
Esteban, sighing, replied:
"As you wish," and immediately stepped back.
The young man thought that Brend's hostile attitude toward him hadn't changed since their last encounter, which saddened him slightly.
"If you're worried about my friend Ugkar, he's not here. It's just me," said Esteban, trying to gain his trust.
Brend raised his head, remembering how powerful that skunktaur was.
"I'm not afraid of your friend," he responded defiantly.
Esteban could only smile, recalling how Ugkar had defended him that time. After a few seconds of silence, the engineer declared:
"Well, if you have nothing else to say, I'm leaving. Excuse me," and he turned to head for the exit.
Brend, still tense, felt lost. It wasn't his style to ask favors of others. His pride was too great. He thought that perhaps it was better if the human left. However, upon observing one of the Khudok fighter cards that little Cashir had given him, he closed his eyes and exclaimed:
"Wait!... Please..."
At that hour, Lilethe was finishing one of her visits to a patient's house in the residential area of Amistad. As she headed to her PTV, she received a call on her PADD from the medical center.
“Hello, Lilethe! How did it go with Shir Sunsky?”
“Relia! Very well, thank you. Shi will need a follow”up in a couple of days. Their pain has decreased considerably.”
“I’m glad to hear that, hee hee. I hope shi recovers soon. And I also hope I assigned you good patients today.”
“You’re doing an excellent job, Relia” the skunktaur replied, wagging hys fluffy tail.
“Thank you!” the polar bear responded from the other end of the line.
“Alright. My next patient is...”
“Hys name is Sebrian, and hy’s a skunktaur like you. Hy requested medical attention due to discomfort in one of hys legs. I’ll send you the details and the address to your PADD right away”
“Thanks, Relia. I’ll go right away.”
“Good luck, Lilethe. Tail high!”
“Hee hee, tail high!, Relia” said the nurse before ending the call.
After settling into her PTV and programming it with the address of the next patient, the vehicle began to move automatically toward its new destination. As hy traveled through the clear streets of the city, Lilethe thought about Esteban and his meeting with Brend. Hy concentrated for a moment and sensed from a distance the emotions hys lifemate was experiencing at that moment: a strange mix of tranquility and unease. Hy also noticed melancholy, something hy hadn’t perceived in Esteban for a long time.
“I just hope everything goes well, my love” hy murmured, sending him positive thoughts.
The PTV soon arrived at its destination. After entering another residential neighborhood and turning a couple of streets, it finally stopped in front of the assigned house. Lilethe prepared hys nursing bag and got out of the vehicle. The house was of an old style with large windows and a garden full of flowers.
After knocking on the door, it opened after a few minutes of waiting. A violent shiver shook Lilethe when she saw the skunktaur that appeared in the doorway.
“No! Noooo! It's you! Here!” hy exclaimed distressed, dropping hys briefcase to the floor.
Hy was a slender, long-haired specimen in the male phase, whose features were all too familiar to the nurse.
“Faise!” Hy shouted as took a few steps back with the hands on hys snout.
Esteban approached the bars again, although this time he decided to keep a certain distance so as not to bother the renzar. After a few seconds of silence, Brend stammered:
“I know... I know that... I have no right to ask you for anything. Bu... but I reconsidered your last offer to get out of here. And I thought that... uh... my social worker, Sunbeam, told me that it is possible to serve the rest of my sentence with night confinement. Bu... but the judge will not agree if you... if you do not agree with that.”
The renzar snorted between each sentence, not daring to look Esteban in the eye. He, for his part, remained silent, listening attentively to each word of Brend.
“Uh... I... I apologize for what I did” continued the prisoner. “It was wrong... Very wrong... That wasn't me... I was so obsessed with winning... I got carried away by those drugs and lost control... And I almost killed you…”
At that moment, his legs trembled and, like a dam about to burst, his emotions overflowed his powerful pride. He fell to his knees and his vision became clouded by tears. He couldn't say anything else and sobbed for a long time, with his arms resting on the ground.
Like ghostly projections, the images of his past life and his hard childhood manifested in his mind. An involuntary journey into his own interior, which bared his soul in front of a stranger.
“I... I'm sorry…” he continued stammering through tears, with his gaze fixed on the ground. At that moment, he perceived a soft caress on his ears. He raised his head slowly and, with surprise, saw Esteban standing in front of him.
“How? How did you manage to get in here?” Brend asked through tears.
“We bribed the guard with a couple of trading cards. Didn’t we, Cashir?” Esteban replied as the small, dark-skinned Chakat appeared behind the human and suddenly lunged at Brend. The renzar took him in his arms and stood up, moving a few steps away from Esteban. Cashir covered his giant friend's face with soft licks. Brend, disoriented and surprised, did not know what to think or say.
"Cashir really wanted to see you and touch you. He is a very persistent child and I could not stop hym from coming. I hope it does not bother you," said Esteban. Brend sat on the cell seat with the little chakat in his arms. The sweetness and affection emanating from hir eyes moved him. He could not remember the last time someone had shown such selfless devotion to him.
"Will you fight again? I want to see you on the arena! Yes!" exclaimed the infant with emotion.
"Uh... I... I don't know, little one," answered Brend, still bewildered.
"The night confinement regime will allow you to do other activities during the day. Maybe you can please Cashir and return to Khudok,” Esteban added with a smile.
Hearing this, Brend looked him in the eyes for the first time. He felt that a great weight had suddenly disappeared from his heart. He left Cashir on the ground and approached the human slowly. He still remembered how he had hurt him badly with his hands. Those same hands that now wanted to hug him, did not even dare to approach him.
“I... Thank you…” he stammered before stopping.
“We all make mistakes, Brend. I made many too. And I paid for them,” the human replied. Then, addressing the chakat, he declared:
“Let's go, Cashir. Your cards only bought us five minutes in here, hehe, hehe, hehe. We must leave or your mom and Natany might get upset with us.”
“Yes, let's go!” replied the little boy, happy to have finally been able to be close to hir sports idol.
As they headed for the exit, Esteban felt a sudden pull back. The powerful renzar held him in his arms and cradled him against him. The engineer had not expected that spontaneous gesture from the great renzar and was surprised to feel the moisture of tears in his hair.
“Forgive me, boy,” Brend said, his voice full of emotion.
Esteban took one of his hands and replied:
“I already did. Now forgive yourself. That's what's important.”
Esteban could feel for the first time the incredible softness of Brend's skin. He smiled when he noticed it.
“Heh, you have softer fur than Regthar's. But don't tell him,” he murmured as he responded to Brend's hug.
“As you say,” the prisoner replied excitedly, still hugging him.
“Excuse me, are you okay?” the skunktaur asked, surprised by the nurse's attitude.
“Don't come closer!” Lilethe exclaimed in astonishment.
“Hey, my name is Sebrian Skunktaur, not Faise. You're confusing me with someone else” insisted the skunktaur, bewildered.
Hearing those words, Lilethe went blank for a moment. The face of that stranger no longer seemed to be that of the evildoer. Her mind began to clear and, with it, calm returned.
“I... I'm sorry... I apologize for my... It's just that for a moment I thought you were…”
“Yes, I understand. Please, calm down…”
“Oh, I'm a fool... I'm really sorry, Shir Sebrian.”
“Don't worry. Uh... Do you still want to tend to my leg or should I ask for another nurse?”
“Uh?... No... It's not necessary. I'll gladly take care of it” Lilethe quickly replied.
“Okay. Go ahead, then” said Sebrian, inviting the nurse to enter the house.
Lilethe couldn't help but feel embarrassed by the episode. She entered, apologizing profusely and ready to do hys job. Hy never expected hys mind to play such a trick on hym.
