Ursus Maritimus (watercolor portrait)
Decided to share a piece of artwork I did for a school project. The objective was to create a Canadian wildlife stamp, so this is why the format is square.
This is 99% watercolor, except for my line work and a few gouche touch ups. I didn't over detail this, since it was reduced to stamp size AND its watercolor :)
It was an interesting challenge, since the core shadow is a bluey color reflecting off of water or arctic scenery. Working on a 12x12 inch surface, and so large, was a challenge to keep everything in control. Overall this was a great study! I am a bit more confident with working in larger sizes.
Special thanks to Chris Mallinson for giving me permission to use his photographs to work from.
Thanks for looking

Thanks! Probably so, yes. However, the right side is supposed to be very saturated/bright light and look near-washed out completely. So every minute detail of fur was not meant to be captured on that side of the page. What currently shows is the neck fur, what is in the background is meant to be the rest of its body. Anyhow, just explaining what I attempted to capture. I appreciate the comment :)
Wow that is stunning!
Detailed realism work can be challenging with watercolours but I rather like the challenge.
Mm love the colours here, the warm yellow-white contrasting with the cool blue. And the way you did the eyes is great, really make it seem like the bear is in full sunlight. <3
