Two words man. What. Ever.
With that 1500 HP Turbine JET PETROL GUZZLER you can't get a very MILITARISED range out of your fuel tank.
And we get JUST as fast speeds out of the diesel, because of the form-factor and weight of our tank.
It's a more effective machine.
And it's being decomissioned for something even MORE effective, no doubt.

The American M1 Engines ARE very nice. But they WOULD be better if they didn't have such a drinking problem. The M1 is a powerhouse; don't get me wrong. The raw mechanical strength IS there. But the Challenger Mk2 has some features that make it a superior weapon.
The 120mm Rifle, for example, with optional charge ratios, and optional warheads, is far superior to the American
120mm GUN, with 1-piece ammunition design.
The form factor of the Challenger 2 is sleeker, and smaller, making it a tougher little target.
And statistics speak for themselves; to this day, not a single challenger 2 has been destroyed by enemy fire.
But you may be right.
Perhaps it doesn't go as fast. ;)

hate to one up you again man but the M1 A2 V2 sep (the latest model) uses the same 120mm smoothebore cannon as you guys....
we have 5 rounds that we can use:
SABOT (has three versions including the 'super sabot')
HEAT
CAN
MPAT (used for both ground and air targets)
OR
then we got secondary armament:
1x coaxial M240 7.62 MG and another one for the loader
1x coaxial M2 BROWNING MG (50 cal) and the TC has one as well
all of of our rounds are single peice rounds....only thing we get when fired is a 'aft' cap....as far as size and shape...the M1 has the lowest height of any tank on the battlefield today, challenger Mk 2 or what ever, actually has one of the highest....i think the merkkava is the highest...not to mention we have so many more combat effecent tools at our disposal.....for instance...
the CITV (commanders independent thermal veiwer) allows the TC (tank commander) to scan for enemies while the gunner is engaging a target
the MRS (Muzzle ref. System) allows us to make on the spot corrections for relations from our logistics and the end of tthe gun tube...then there are the more technical things that i am not allowed to explain
as for combat loss.....well the only reason no Challengers have lost any due to combat is because they have never seen real combat .... when they rolled in on the ass end of the gulf war doesn't count....and all the M1 deaths in that were all results from friendly fire.....ACTUALLY...what is really funny is the fact that "ONE" (numero uno) M1 A1 took on "FIVE" (numero cinco) T-72's alone and not only survived but was well enough to continue on its misson.....so go ahead and formulate a come back....^.^and if you havent figued it out....I actually work on these tanks on a daily basis...i drive'm shoot'm and know'm more than most even get to see them
just so ya know i is sayin this all in good fun ^.^

Actually Challengers have been waist deep in shit that would melt an M1. 174 RPG 7's in one engagement. The tank was not only still in one piece, but almost completely functional!
As for the M1 using the same gun as the Chally 2, I did *not* know that. But I doubt it's quite as good.
