August 2024.
Hello; here is a new development. I am working on a prototype for a custom lens. It's an aplanat, a simple symmetrical lens. This is the first major outing of this symmetrical design.
There are some issues: the field of focus is not flat, and the image circle is not nearly as large as it ought to be. However, much about the design is working, in particular it is rectilinear, quite sharp, and shows limited astigmatism. I think the problems with my current prototype come from a failure to center or properly align the elements. It also lacks any kind of adjustable stop, and is currently stuck with a 20mm aperture.
This shot was a 3 minute exposure of a nearby overpass; the place holds some strange meaning to me. The exposure was made using the Graphic's curtain shutter.

Homemade 140mm f/7 aplanat-type lens
Speed Graphic Pacemaker 4x5
Ilford film
6x7 negative

1) I am glad that your homemade lens is working out. :)
2) Recommend: do not drive a car, ride a bus, ride a taxi/Lyft/Uber, ride a bicycle, or walk over that overpass. That support column in the foreground is spalled AF.
I am not a civil engineer, and this is not engineering advice, but...
Take a regular daylight photo from this same spot, using a phone or digicam, and send it to the local newspaper, TV station, state Department of Transportation, state representative(s), and state senator(s). (This assumes you're in the USA.) That column needs shoring/cribbing (additional external support) like yesterday.

This bridge has been absolutely gonked for a few years, and I have been worried about it. The "good news" is that it's being rebuilt some time in the next year, but only to make it a five-lane to support, of all things... A Bucees. So, at least something's being done about it.
