It was released in the japanese arcades in '89, then ported to the Sega Mega Drive AKA the Genesis in '91 and the PC Engine CD-ROM in '92. It was never released outside of Japan and Europe. But, thanks to the internet, ROM downloads of Zero Wing and Genesis emulators are available for any hardcore retrogamer.
