I've a lot of fluffy plot tidbits lying around in my Red Lantern pre-production work that's never seen the light of day. Since the comic is now moderately mature, I figure it's time I start posting some of them.
These are the national flags for the three mammalian nations of importance in the comic. In order from left to right:
Carvecia
Mataa (clan/den names in black vary from tribe to tribe, and are individually sewn or dyed over the national symbol. The flag pictured is of the Immar clan.)
Amuresca
A little information on each nation. .. .
Amuresca - Northern Nation, culturally a mix between English and Dutch. Centrally located Capital City is Highvolle, an island nation and the massing point for the Amurescan Navy. Species that tend to originate from Amuresca are dogs, red foxes, boars, and rats. Amurescans generally ride blue-blood horse breeds, and sail European ships. Amuresca has a national religion, which puts an emphasis on industry, colonization, and procreation focusing on strengthening bloodlines and breeds. Amuresca is also the only remaining nation with a King or any empowered Royalty, and hold fast to their system of Nobility and entitlement. Amuresca's environment is Western European, in general, being primarily deforested, sprawling expanses of fields, the occasional thickly-wooded area, and marshy lowlands.
Carvecia - Far Western Continent nation, once a colony of the Amurescans. They claimed independence some 100 years ago, and tensions are still high. Much of their culture is a mix between the native mammalian tribes that once inhabited their nation, and the Amurescan influence. Species that tend to originate from Carvecia are wolves, a few North American large cat species, coyotes, bears, and the occasional arctic species. Carvecians generally ride wilder, warm-blooded horse breeds, and ponies, and sail ships similar to the Amurescans, but larger. Carvecia has traces of Amuresca's religion remaining, but is far less restrictive, specifically in breeding. They have an elected government, but the natural species of the continent still struggle for any real power within it. Most of the government is still run by Amurescan descendants. Carvecia is currently allied with Amuresca for the war, but most fleets are unwilling to work together. Carvecia's environment extends from the more decidious, warmer forests far up north, to coniferous woodlands and tundra.
Mataa - A nation controlled primarily by powerful Hyena tribes, located South of Amuresca and across the ocean from Carvecia. Mataa practices political neutrality, and free trade, but it is a harsh country for all those not fortunate enough to have been born into the right caste. Centuries ago, Amuresca lead a crusade into Mataa to 'civilize' the tribes. The Crusade ultimately failed, but Amuresca's forces retreated only after the Tribal Leaders of Mataa agreed to enter into a civil contract that forbade certain practices that had brought about the Crusade and deeply offended the Amurescan people. . . one of which was the banning of slavery. Since that time, Mataa tribes have practiced a form of 'indentured servitude' for lesser denizens that borders, but doesn't quite break the contract. Mataa has a vast mixture of species dwelling in their borders due to their open trade policies, but the natural species are Hyena, Jackals, Squirrels and other rodents, Tigers, Lions, and many smaller felines. Mataa keep warm-blooded horses and raise vast amounts of goats and cattle. Their ships tend to be small, in the 'junk' style, and are primarily used for shallow water trade. They have little to no interest in overseas wars, except for the sale of arms. Mataa's environment depends greatly on the monsoon season. The lands can be quite dry and desert-like, but when the rains come, they can turn lush and flood quite easily. Inland the climate is a bit more stable, and made primarily of spotty bush forests, growing greener the closer you go towards the delta, and the rivers.

intriguing: the three countries all have cultures similar but different enough to cause friction. Something I'm curious about, as reading your descriptions, I see no mention of Cetaceans. Are there anthro cetaceans, and if so, do they have any allegience, or are they still based upon tribal pods, or some other culture, such as open seas banditry? I'm also Curious about the role of Avians, if they also are anthro within the universe.
this comic unfortunately is almost more complex than we can handle, already. . . so cetacean, avian, and many other species will probably never be addressed. A lot of the species in this world simply never evolved. For one, if you'll note, there are no herbivorous species. . . at all. All anthros in the RL world are carnivorous, or omnivorous. This is because addressing the issue of 'beasts of burden' and livestock versus their anthro counterparts is a dangerous world I'd rather not enter :P Avians are difficult because flight would seriously tip the scales of any war, and the Drakes are supposed to be the only critters capable of it. Similarly, cetaceans would be able to use the water to their advantage in naval conflicts, and we'd have to work up a whole 'underwater' society for them. The story has so much going on as it is, if we segwayed any more, I'm afraid it'd be too hard to follow.
But perhaps next time! There ARE semi-aquatic species in this comic. They're reptilian. . . but hey, it's something!

*smiles* thanks for the explanation; yes, the comic is intricate, and I salute you for that:) You're right about aquatics being able to cause all sorts of mayhem for shipping, the same for anyone with flight, though I was figuring without massive physiological rearrangements avians and such would simply be too heavy for any type of powered flight, based upon realistic physics.
I did note the lack of any form of herbivore anthro as well, figured that was deliberate, both to tone down story complexity and to also help streamline the economics of the world.
Indeed, perhaps next time, I salute you both for taking on such an audacious project, and doing very well so far:)
I think into country trade could prove interesting indeed; for example, how much do you charge for catnip, when among the felines it could almost be considered like opium?
Well technically, if you believe in the multiverse it is an alternate universe. Since everything and anything you can imagine does exist. Like, right now in another world I'm typing this exact same comment and I'm spontaneously combusting while my world being invaded by a hungry Earth-2149. And no, people, it did not end well, but I guess in another universes it did end well. Oh look at me, I'm rambling. It is quite fun to dwell on the possibilities.
Very true. I think what I meant to say is that 'it's not Earth, but with animals'. It is certainly meant to be close to our history, but it's not historical fiction, exactly. I made a point of avoiding that, because I am not a history buff, by any means, and I knew the comic would get enough growly rumblings for the sensitive subject matter, without pissing off the history folks. They are no joke!
Too true. That's why I never debate history.
And don't worry about what others say. Half the people who are jumping on you for this are probably into a slave fetish. Why they pick on you? Because you are popular and you give them replies. They also do it because they want to show how they are different from those other sick furries. Psychologists call it CORF (cutting off reflected failure) How do I know this? Because 1) I love reading up on psychology and 2) I've seen it before with the YouTube Furry War of 07 and the Wolfeedarkfang flame war. I would go on more but I don't want to bore you with a wall of text.

rukis, i am reading Nick vujicic's Life without Limits, and one chapter describes his travel in India's slum overrun by pimps and prostitutes. in india, there are male prostitutes as well, and they are called hijras. would Amon qualify as a hijra? to me it seems like mat'aa is heavily influenced by indian culture. you did mention that Amon wears a traditional indian garment... and i saw a picture of a hijra who wore a similar garment (flowery robe). if the ma'taa is indian-influenced, where and how did you find so much information on india? your story line is amazing. it really looks like the "real" thing :)
I did a LOT of research. And yes, Amon is heavily inspired by hijra, although he alternates between feminine and masculine depending on the client. The whole of the Shanivaar island chain is inspired by real brothel islands that have existed, and still exist, even today.
The best storylines often come from reality :)

ahhh you really are a great writer - great writers always do tons of research. one author spent 8 yrs researching on pottery just for her novel (which is pretty short).
if amon alternates between masculine and feminine, does it mean women visit brothels too....? that's kind odd... thanks for the comments and awesome work as usual! (i can't say anything negative although i am really picky... i study art)

I have to say that the description of Carvecia seems like my best place to be... I am pratially bias for being a Bear myself.. hehe, but yeah.. sounds right ^^
Great flags, and i like the description of the countries a lot. And kinda feeel sorry for the Mataa denicitizens like Amon.. and others forced into this indirect slavery.
Great story and setting Rukis ^^ waiting eagerly for more of Red Lantern ^^
Thanks ^^ *Smiles and waves*

Warmer deciduous forests up north? So southern hemisphere then, got it.
For some reason it's the fidgety little details like that which really scratch my worldbuilding itch.
The first thing I though when reading that Mataa is dry with seasonal monsoons is, "Oh, well obviously they should start digging swales to force the runoff into the ground and raise the water table."

Well heeey, I was all worried that Amon and Dhaval were slaves! Good to know they aren't actually slaves, now I can sleep easy.
-_-
People (and Amurescans too, it seems) can be silly when they think their words mean things. You've sketched yourself some very cool cultures, full of flaws and contradictions. I can't wait to read more!
