I would get the unissued Nationale Volksarmee soldier's jackboots for work. Those had plastic soles and heels; packaged and shipped in colorful boxes. Some popped stitches were repaired over the course of wearing them. Then the worn down boots were sold on Ebay, likely to a collector or reenactor.
