I may never understand religion no matter how much I tried

It's not an 'understanding.' It's a belief. It's hard to *believe* in something that you don't align with.

But don't you have to have some level of understanding of something in order to be able to believe it? Someone believing that 2 + 2 = 4 is one thing as opposed to someone else believing that two plus two equals fish. And don't get me started on the old superstition that four is an unlucky number because it sounds like the word for death

Ah, right there. You said 'that old superstition.' There has to be a semblance of belief or hope to be able to comprehend it. Trying to force logic into everything doesn't really slot in with it.
What are miracles if not a one ina million chances of something occuring for someone's benefit?
As for the 'understanding' part, you could argue the same for 'karma.'

Regardless, I'm way too mentally tired to try to explain this properly, with another week coming up.
