So Ixa was kidnapped and experimented on by her government. They were trying to create stronger soldiers, and some of the tests they tried were to mix animal DNA and/or newfound robotics and nanotechnology to make the human body stronger. Ixa was the first "successful" one to incorporate both. However, she's still fairly unstable. The experiments have messed with her memories, and her ability to control her body.
So occasionally her DNA causes her to appear more robotic or animalistic in form. Most of the time she's able to prevent anything from morphing too far, but if she's under enough stress she can't control it. It's one of her deepest fears that one day she won't be able to revert back to normal.
