Here is the second preview to my Beastars Legend fanfic! You may notice a key difference in the story as compared to how it was originally presented in the anime / manga!Beastars Legend - Preview #2“Wh-what?? Legoshi, how in the world did you manage to figure that out?? I never had any trouble with Algebra until now! You, on the other hand, are blowing through this quickly! It's simply weightless paper for you!” Jack, Durham, and Legoshi declined an earlier offer from Collot to take part in and spectate a recess performance session by the Brown Sugar idol group. The sheepdog had taken Voss along to join while Miguno joined to secretly practice his music skills. This left the Labrador, wolf, and coyote buddies remaining in 701 to assist each other in catching up with their schoolwork, consisting mainly of homework and exams.
“Man, you seem to have more trouble than me; and I thought I was the dumb one in math. Legoshi's the brainiac out of all of us!” Equally frustrated by the Algebra he is doing also, Durham turns to Legoshi for answers; his tail is wagging anxiously where he demands, “How did you figure that out so fast?!”
Being the calm one, Legoshi just sat on his bed, reading over his own work references. He grabs a nearby reference book and shows Durham the arithmetic, citing the factor, “Think of the exclamation marks as a chain find - it's the best way I can put it.”
“A what?” Durham's ears lower out of confusion. He scowls at the wolf in question. “What does a word-find have to do with a stupid exclamation mark? It makes no sense!”
“Well in a chained word-find, each ending letter is the first; so in factoring, you multiply the result by each product. You guys can ask Woody, Jim, or Jamal about it when they get back.” Legoshi replied, his tail swishing softly on his mattress.
While Jack gives a condescending glare to his wolf friend, the Labrador can't help but feel a little jealous. He internally laments, ‘Ugh! This stuff is not for me! How is he able to figure this out so fast?!’
“Man, this stuff is boring! I see why most of us fail at math.” Durham complained in frustration. Legoshi, however, remains unfazed by the chatter coming from his two roommates. He simply ignores Durham's complaining, yet frowns mildly in contemplation. Inwardly, he grumbles, ‘I really don't see what the big deal is with numbers. We use 'em in everyday life so it's nothing big to worry about.’
Shutting his book, Legoshi stands up to stretch his limbs, leaving his two friends struggling with their Algebra. He turns to the two and announces, “I'm gonna take a walk to stretch and probably head outside. You guys wanna join me?”
“Anything to get away from this torture. Hah, I could use some exercise myself.” Durham accepts the offer, getting ready to leave with Legoshi. Yet he sneers, “Maybe get another chance to best Woody in another match. Those toe claws hurt.”
While Durham rubs his face in reminiscence, a brief flashback scene captures Durham and Woody going at it in a sort of challenge brawl with the brown wolf tagging the coyote on the cheek with a swift left kick to the face, leaving behind four narrow scratches on his right cheek.
“Durham, you're the one who challenged him in the first place. Did you really expect an American student to be an easy win? He's more skilled than you!” Jack remembers when he was watching the display, hence reminding Durham of the difference in skill level.
“Always a second attempt to try again and win.” While the coyote cracks his knuckles, Legoshi hugs his shoulders. “Speaking of that, remember when he saved those herbivore students from those bullies? None of us can fight like that.”
“You were the one who darted outside to search for him when he ran off.” Durham whines in complaint. “If I directed someone to get the headmaster and the principal, I would have stayed put!”
“I wanted to see if he was okay!” Legoshi defended, annoyed at Durham's complaint. His expression changes to apologetic worry where he rubs his head. “He also seemed to be pretty stressed out after that massive fight.”
“I’ll bet on that. Still, it's no surprise that those bullies were barred permanently from Cherryton following that whole fiasco. In a way, they did have it coming.” Durham acknowledged. “But enough about that - I’m ready to go outside and stretch!”
~~~~~Outside the school grounds, Durham is outside roaming and stretching his legs when he hears music playing ahead of him followed by cheering and whooping laughter. The coyote begins to search for the source when he notices a crowd of students surrounding three canine students that are dancing to the music. Intrigued, Durham wanders over to check out the scene more closely. Only then does he mutter at the music, “Hey, that's pretty catchy! I want to see this! There must be some sort of dance-off going on!”
The song playing from the radio is Bust a Move by Young MC and three canines are dancing to the song. Upon approach, the coyote can clearly see Woody at the forefront of the crowd and Jim and Jamal as backup dancers, all three swinging to the beat. Wanting in on the action, Durham calls out, “Hey! Is there room enough for four!? I wanna join this gig too!!”
“Go on ahead! Anyone is free to join!” Woody exclaims through the music.
~~~~~Later on in the afternoon, Jack and Legoshi are all headed to their final class. The two canine friends are strolling along the hallway when the golden retriever observes Legoshi’s confidence stride. “You look better than you did earlier! I’m proud of you!”
“Yep! Thanks to the encouragement from several of my peers, I no longer have to worry about being scary. I can just be myself from now on!” Legoshi declares confidently.
“Hmmm, I see.” Jack turns thoughtful at the wolf’s confidence in his stride, wondering if it's something more than friendly advice. “I think it's because of something else.”
“Oh really?” Legoshi slows down his pace and eyes the dog curiously, “Like what?”
“Maybe…” Jack points out, “...you found a girlfriend.”
(🎵 Sea of Amorphity - Bejeweled 2 Soundtrack)“!” Legoshi freezes at the spot from Jack's assumption; the golden retriever bounces along, his tail wagging in a teasing manner while singing, “Oh! My tail’s swinging! Maybe I’m in love!”
‘Have I really changed that much…??’ Legoshi rubs his cheek in thought from internally concluding his reason for his spurt when Jack suddenly stops singing and sputters upon rushing up to him.
“No way!! You, of all people?! Oh wow, that's killer! You gotta tell me all about it!!” Jack’s excitement is contagious if it wasn't for Legoshi briskly leaving and his mind sharply focused, or forced, to make it to their next session. “Uh, let's get to class, okay? We're gonna be late.”
While passing by a hallway, a few other students notice the wolf and golden retriever but keep to themselves, either out of uncertainty or Jack’s excited rambling.
~~~~~Fun fact: the idol group, Brown Sugar, consists of 5 transfer students. They are - Woody Allen, Jim Callen, Guido Aurelias, Alfieri Avlar, and Jamal Henschel. Woody, Jim, and Jamal are from the United States, Guido is from Italy, and Alfieri is from Germany.
