Autumn, 1331
Within minutes, the veterans of Kerkule’s Division crumpled before the onslaught, quickly carrying Darlew’s units with them. In response, Jeraue's Division slowly began to fall back, pulling individual infantry battalions to try to staunch the holes suddenly blown through the center of the army. However, these emergency forces were simultaneously being hit and pummeled from the sky by Dodge’s aerial units. Everywhere the troops of the Imperial Army halted their costly assaults and began to withdraw, as though the hull of a ship had punctured and was slowly sinking, while the maelstrom battle in the skies above Caldern continued to gradually consume everything around it from air and land.
Still, Anhake had reserves of his own, and he played them now.
“New dragons!” Logan suddenly called out, pointing at a new squadron of seven dragons taking to the air, before adding: “Which side are they on?”
“I think you know.” Mera grumbled.
The Black Drakes dramatically intervened into the fight, slamming into the surprised gryphon squadrons in a vicious ambush of tooth and fire, immediately incinerating or tearing apart a dozen avians from the sky. Caught between their own diving attacks on the Tassurian infantry and the sudden aerial counter strike, the gryphon squadrons reeled back and broke apart, with individual or small groups of winged-lions trying desperately to deal with the new threat.
Seeing what was happening Mera turned to his own squadron, gesturing to the recoiling gryphon forces. *They need help.*
Rewga snorted. *Just let the feathered ones fight the traitors!*
Mera was slightly stunned by that response. *Oh, don’t be an ass. If the Black Drakes take down the gryphons they’ll still turn and hit us next.*
When there was no further response, the Dragon Lord paused his own attacks to glance back at each member of his squadron. Despite his call, none of the other dragons seemed that enthusiastic about their commander’s newfound idea. Finally the bronze wyrm sighed.
*Fine, fine. Hthersarw, continue the ground assaults. I’ll go see what I can do myself.*
Hthersarw didn’t bother to acknowledge the order before Mera soared off.
“What was that about?” Logan asked as the bronze dragon left the rest of his forces behind.
“Old grudges.” His ride muttered, before declaring, “We’re helping the gryphons!”
“Oh.” Logan nodded and picked up his bow. “Well, let’s not take too long at it.”
Soaring high into the air, Mera searched around for allies to help, eventually intervening into a fight between three gryphons fleeing before a copper dragon. The Black Drake was shocked to see a fellow dragon move against him and immediately spread his wings forward to halt his pursuit before unleashing a sheet of flame at the bronze dragon. Mera easily dodged the unprepared response to deal the copper a firm slash in the face with his claws.
The Black Drake reeled from the blow but quickly recovered and responded by pouncing at Mera.
*You traitor! You’ve ruined everything!* The copper dragon roared, grappling with the bronze wyrm. The two reptiles-and the human atop one-twirled wildly through the clouds in the air.
*I’m the traitor?* Mera retorted. *You Black Drakes are the ones who nearly destroyed our people by dragging us into this ruinous war!* With some effort he threw off the copper wyrm, who immediately flew back to comfort him.
*Coming from you who threw away all of our sacrifices? You who let so many of our people die in vain? Who is a thrall to a human riding you? Who is now fighting with gryphons against your- *
“Shut up!” Logan yelled as he released an arrow into the copper dragon’s eye.
Roaring in pain, the Black Drake tumbled from the sky, grasping at his wound.
“We were talking!” Mera snapped at the human on his back.
“You two dragons were just flying around growling at each other. We’re here to fight!” Came the response. “We need you! The gryphons are getting slaughtered!”
“Fine, fine.”
Shaking his head in vexation, the bronze dragon continued on, trying to find more allies to help. Eventually he flew in besides two gryphons locked in aerial combat against a silver dragon, the three figures dancing in the skies in an intricate play of fire, blood, teeth, claws, tails and wings. Unable to blast away for fear of hitting the winged lions, Mera swooped in to try to tackle the Black Drake. However, noticing the attack at the last minute, his opponent swung her back and evaded the strike, beginning to conjure up a fireball and then abruptly stopping.
*The Feral?* The silver dragon asked in shock.
One of the gryphons took the opportunity of the pause to strike, tearing down upon the Black Drake's shoulder. With a roar of pain, the silver dragon violently kicked off the bird-lion before breaking off to flee.
As the silver wyrm retreated, the second gryphon turned its fury upon Mera and with a screech tried pouncing upon him. The bronze dragon quickly eluded the attack, then dived out of the way as the first, wounded gryphon recovered and also went after the bronze wyrm, claws violently swiping at his back.
“Hey! I’m your ally here!” Mera called back with annoyance as he tried to break off from this fight.
Either not caring about or not understanding their coalition, the feathered ones pursued, one snapping out with her beak that nearly took off the fleeing bronze dragon’s right hindpaw while Logan clung tightly to the saddle.
Eventually Mera soared upwards as far as he could, and then as the two gryphons converged around him abruptly folded his wings and dived down between the pair in a corkscrew to finally break away from them.
Freed from pursuing friends or foes, the bronze dragon stopped a distance away from combat to reassess his options. On his back Logan was desperately trying to catch a breath after having the wind knocked out of him while also trying to keep his stomach from expelling its contents.
“This is hopeless.” The Forester finally gasped aloud.
“Agreed. Where is that Auxian-talking gryphon we met earlier?” The bronze dragon grumbled. “She leads them right?”
“I think there’s two leaders, but yes let’s go find Fetati. It is better than having us all just mill around, possibly getting killed by either side.”
Mera nodded and began searching. “Good idea. See, it is definitely useful to have you on my back.”
