the most honest creatures
on Capitol Hill
and the most beautiful
at first, a far-off speck
then, nearer, a form:
a gull soars
closer and closer
and dives
down
down
down
down
and then... out
gliding over the water,
surveying
finally, flaring his wings,
he lands
and tucks them in
joining his fellows
on the gently rippling waves
of the reflecting pool
and I see my reflection
in his face
and his wings
are like my wings
as if there were no difference
between feather and scale
it's been two long months now
and I don't know when I will walk again
but I miss my gulls
and those parts of myself that I see
when I watch them fly
