Back in November this picture of me and that wonderful dog Derby, was in the Payson Newspaper.
This week, I want to express my appreciation to the animals that enrich our lives and show us unconditional love. I also want to express my appreciation to the community for their tremendous support. To the board members who keep us on track and help us accomplish our goals. To our amazing donors, thank you so much for everything. To the wonderful volunteers, we couldn’t do it without you. And last but certainly not least, the staff. Working with these girls, I see an abundance of compassion, love and respect. Hard-working and dedicated are just a few of the words that can describe them. They are heroes to me and I want them to know they are greatly appreciated.
Because they matter, here are their picks from me to you.
And underneath mine and Derby's picture was; Kyle picked Derby because she has a bond with him. He listens very well and responds to training. He is somewhat shy, but truly a sweet guy.
Now every dog and cat that was featured that week, was adopted, because of this article. Derby however, never went home. I waited and someone finally took him into their family, but all too soon, they brought him back. Their reason was he had growled at their son and husband. Derby sat two more months at the shelter, before he was put on our list of dogs to be euthanized due to lack of space. Quickly I got word out that he was on his thirteenth hour and my old boss came and took him. Knowing how she is with animals I figured he would never come back.
I was wrong. Not even three days after my boss told me Derby would be returning for biting the grandson of my old boss. Mind you, he didn't break skin and we've kept plenty of dogs alive when they did break skin. She said they would be putting him down that day.
I sat with him too say my goodbyes and of course, broke down into tears and my boss was forced to pull the dog away from me so they could go ahead with the euthanasia.
This picture is in memory of Derby. All he needed was a good home and a loving family. I'm sorry, Derby. I wish I could have been the one to take you home with me. <3
