With the world cracked and barely saved, Cynder takes it upon herself to end the purple dragon threat for good. Content to die with them she is saved by an unexpected ally, the golden star which has been guiding her out of darkness since they met. Together Cynder and Sparx are the only ones who can stop darkness from rising again, but will they?

I wrote this in, uh... 2011? 2010? I don't even remember. It's a little story I still think about and it made so many people mad back in the day. Which is a sure sign it needs to come back. :D
This was technically a sequel to a series of vignettes I was writing that sets up a more definitive relationship between Sparx and Cynder. The only one I finished is the first chapter, so you'll have to pretend I wrote five more of those to establish how Sparx feels. Cynder has a complicated history and curiosity became obsession became love. Sparx overcame his fear thanks to Spyro's determination to see good in everyone and after all the adventures he's become fond of her. The world just ended and there's no point in mincing words between them now.
TW: character death, justifying murder, actual murder, near death, threats of death, discussions of dying, one exposed internal organ.

I remember this fanfic! Hard to believe it's 14? years old.
I'll be honest the only thing that upset me about this fanfic was that Spyro died... That's it. I didn't mind Sparx and Cynder getting together as I've always saw Spyro and Cynder as having a platonic relationship.
Funny Enough I called what happened to Spyro the Nathan Hale effect ( if you've played the Resistance games you'll know why ).

Oh dang, you've been here awhile! Glad I'm not the only one who remembers it. :)
I can see it both ways with Spyro dying. This whole thing started out as that one bit of writing though, just showing that Cynder even at her best can be horribly ruthless. I agree that her and Spyro make more sense as friends or even separated siblings. She'd still kill him if she thought it was for the best (and in this story, she does think that).
Haha I have no idea what this means, I'm afraid. Never even heard of the Resistance games. I'm a platformer and Metroidvania player more than anything else.

I've been here since Riverstyxx was writing Residual Darkness.
The reason Spyro dying upset me was because I'm not really a fan of the idea of going through a hero's journey from the moment their born just to see them get killed. It feels like a waste of a character to me, I mean why see them get born if their story ends in death by another's hand (looking at you the Last Jedi )?
To be fair the only Cynder that isn't ruthless is the Academy one, though unlike the Legend and the Skylanders ones she was never exposed to The Darkness even if she was insecure about her heritage as Malefor's daughter.
True and even teacher and student like in Academy, seeing Spyro train Cynder was one of the best things I saw especially since she's a pacifist in that.
I'd like to think it's the same way with Spyro, if he saw Cynder as a true threat he won't hesitate to kill her if she gave him no choice ( he only didn't in the games because he saw her as a victim of Malefor's corruption and thought it was unfair she never got to make the choice of who she wants to be ). I'll be honest I was working on a story where Cynder was secretly evil all along, but I stopped writing it because I lost interest in the plot. I'm working on a new story were Cynder is Malefor's daughter and is every bit as evil as him, it's a lot more light hearted then my other story which is making it more fun to write.
The Nathan Hale effect: The main character is killed off by one of their allies who then becomes the new main character, despite being seen as a villain by most of the good guys for killing the hero they still end up saving the world and even end up with the previous main character's sibling ( I kid you not that's what happens in the Resistance series ).
Okay, I'm more of an RPG player myself ( which is why I got into Skylanders pretty easily ) though I am flexible with most gaming genres as long as their not Soul's like.

Still love Riverstyxx's books. They're so good!
Now see, I am the reverse. I despise the chosen hero narrative. It's insulting, unrealistic, and rooted in very awful real-world ideologies like eugenics and the idea that people are born good or evil instead of being made so. Nobody deserves a reward just for being born and everybody dies, no matter how noble (and often the true heroes are the ones who die first). Also The Last Jedi is the only Star Wars movie I've really enjoyed in over 20 years. XD
Honestly I don't think Spyro would do the same. He is not a soldier nor even really a dragon. He was raised by peaceful dragonflies and I think the only reason he succeeded at all was because of that upbringing. He's also just plain not very bright and not the sort who thinks things through. Stuff happens to him and he sometimes makes a very base, binary choice, but on the whole he's a pawn to everyone around him in LoS and doesn't have the heart to kill (except when someone tells him to kill one specific kind of people; it's fine if it's those dirty apes but you'll note he doesn't even kill the actual cause of 2000 years of misery for the entire planet, just shoves Malefor off on the Ancestors again). ...this is why I don't really get along with other LoS fans. XD
Okay but that sounds awesome?! I'm looking into Resistance now just for that. XD Villain redemption is so much more interesting to me than yet another hero story based on the completely made up crap Hero's Journey narrative Joseph Campbell lied into cultural relevance.
I miss RPGs but they're too text heavy and I can't read that much anymore. Fuck Souls likes though. I won't play those without invincibility mods at least (I do like Hollow Knight but only modded).

So is The Chaotic Queen of Madness's stories. Even if she didn't finish it I still enjoyed Spyro Madness Saga, though D-L By Undead Prowess still remains my favourite.
That's fair, everyone has a right to their own opinion. I personally don't mind the chosen hero narrative because it's like a higher power has contingency plans to stop things from getting too screwed up by everyone's choices, like no matter how much we fuck up there is always away to unfuck it so one person being selfish and thinking only of themself doesn't ruin it for everyone else. Glad to hear you like The Last Jedi, Revenge of the Sith was the last one I enjoyed.
I think Spyro's upbringing is what stopped him from ending up like Malefor, Malefor was worshiped like a god by everyone around him so it's safe to say he started seeing himself as one. Spyro was pretty bright ( given he could understand what Volteer was saying ) and showed he was a quick learner as it only took him minutes to learn what the Guardians and later the Chronicler were teaching him and he was skilled enough to take down foes dragons of his age shouldn't be able too. Spyro might not have the heart to kill ( he regrets killing Gaul ) but he's shown to take his role as a hero very seriously to the point of blaming himself for the three year war. Maybe he can't kill Malefor, the villain did say he was eternal so maybe it was beyond Spyro's power to do so? The fans are why I'm more of a Skylanders fan these days.
Yeah a good old Villain redemption story is interesting, though to me the villain's reasons for wanting to be redeemed needs to be believable and not done for the sake of having a twist. Nothing worse then seeing a character get away with doing horrible things if they haven't earned it ( if you haven't seen it I do recommend watching Tale Foundry's When Do You Forgive a Villain? ).
I'll be honest I don't really play games with mods because I feel it subtracts from the experience. In game cheats on the other hand.

As an apostate, the thought of some higher power fucking up the world just to make a point does not sit well with me at all haha. And yeah the hero's journey looks like what you've said on the surface, but if you look past that you see so much needless suffering of everyone around the hero as well as the hero themself. As for the hero fixing everything? It didn't even work like that in LoS; the world was literally ripped apart and who knows how many people died horribly, and that was after 2000 years of decline and torment thanks to Malefor. Or just ask the people in the Dark Souls universe; no matter what choice the heroes made, their world is still dead. It's a narrative propped up on lies Joseph Campbell told that very intentionally excludes everyone who isn't a man (yes people have tried to rehabilitate it, but at its roots Campbell himself was very much a misogynist and pretty racist too).
I'm almost incapable of surface level readings of fiction and I'm sure it shows. XD
I'll give that Spyro is more clever than the average Chosen One but I would still say there's really not much to show that when he's good at something it has anything to do with himself. He's a purple dragon, the gods have given him his powers and understanding of them on a silver platter, same as they did with Malefor. Definitely agree that his upbringing made him a much better person though. He's not really a dragon, he's a dragonfly in a dragon's body. :)
Heh yeah, this is ultimately why I'm not in the Spyro fandom at all. No matter what I do people get mad. This is the most civil discussion I've had about the franchise in...almost ten years? Eugh. Skylanders was cute; I didn't ultimately get into it and I managed to miss the show entirely, but I'm glad it did so well. I still have some of the figures and a friend made me a Cyndertits model. XD
I am always interested in villain redemption narratives heh. Dying is easy, the coward's way out, but living is the real punishment. :D Forcing someone to reevaluate their choices and try to make amends just to see if it's even possible always fascinates me, but it also is a way to get past some of the ways we treat real people we've pegged as villains (whether they are or not). Stories shape how we treat people so, at least in fiction, there is no crime too great that's not worth trying to redeem. And yes I did see that Tale Foundry ep, it was a good one. :)
Eh, come back when you have less than 5% of one eye, no peripheral vision, and one depth perception. XD Mods are the choice between getting to play a game and not experiencing it ever for me. I love when devs put in accessibility and cheats though, it's a very good thing! That's how I was able to play and enjoy TUNIC. :) (Although I was also watching Breaking Bad at the same time and now I have a very odd association between the two. XD)

Fair enough. To me the very thought of there being no higher power at all scares me, because no higher power means we don't exist after we die, that means what's the point of us being individuals if it doesn't matter in the end? Why have free will at all? To me that is scarier then death itself.
No one said being the Chosen One was all sunshine and rainbows, in truth the Chosen One is a sacrificial lamb, giving up so much and living with the burden of the choices they made ( the three year war was this to Spyro ) to do one thing to keep fate on track. Also saving the world and fixing it are two different things. Spyro saved the world from being destroyed which was his destiny, he wasn't there to fix everyone's problems, that is up to them to do. He gave them the tools to make a better world now it's up to them to do the rest, if the world gets fixed that's because everyone worked together to make it happen ( though good luck getting that to happen XD ).
Spyro being a Purple Dragon is the reason why his the Chosen One, if he was any other type of dragon he wouldn't be Chosen then. XD I mean the prophecy doesn't even say his name.
Sorry to hear that, sometimes fans make franchises their entire identity ( just look at FNAF, MLP, Undertale and the Sonic fandoms ). If you're still interested in watching the show it's on Youtube now on the channel Amazin' Adventures. I'm still collecting the figures ( and the trading cards ), Nice that your friend made you a custom figure ( I remember seeing a custom Hex figure over on newgrounds, can you guess what part was custom? )
Yeah stories can shape how we see the world, but also how we see the world can shape how we see stories. For instance people who have been treated badly may find it harder to forgive a character in fiction if that character does things that remind them of their pain. To some people some crimes are too great to be forgiven ( which ones are is subjective to the individual ). Still I do agree, sometimes letting the villain live with their choices is a real punishment ( it's why fallen villains are my favourite ones )
I agree the devs giving the option is always nice as it lets anyone play the game. Never played TUNIC ( or saw Breaking Bad ) might see some gameplay later.

Yes! Finally, after 20 years, someone else gets it! XD
I really hated how the Guardians and basically everyone in LoS was always pushing their problems onto anyone but themselves. It’s a recipe for the issues to repeat. And Cynder, being a very good military general, strategist, and not a believer in dragon gods (how could she be? She was raised by apes!) seems like the sort who would rather solve a problem herself to make sure the job is done.

Yeah I agree. Cyn being a general for 12 years of her life is one of the most underutilized aspect of her character. I wish in TEN she succeeded in taking Gaul's staff, showing just how capable she is at taking out key targets (which is what modern militaries do). But that would have taken the spotlight from Spyro, so I guess that's why the devs made her a damsel in distress instead...
Her being a damsel in distress while Spyro stupids himself into heroism is one of the things about LoS that drives me nuts. It doesn't match with either of their characters. I love and hate LoS in almost equal measures for the constant inconsistencies in haha. I am remembering now why I couldn't get along with most of the other fans; I genuinely like these games but it's for like the opposite reasons as everyone else in that I find them charming in spite of being such a disaster on every level. XD
