We here at the kitchens of Full Moon Cuisine love to take our time to bake from scratch. However, there are times when you just don't have the time to do all of that. That's why we've come with our new line of recipes, our "Full Moon Q&E" for some quick and easy treats you can make when you don't have a lot of time. Case in point, a party at your office first thing and you're expected to show up with a tasty treat. What do you do? Stop off at the store and shell out your hard earned bucks for some premade treat? Never! Instead, take a little help from the store, spend a little time, and you can have a simple treat that will leave your customers hungry for more!
Here's what you'll need:
- 4 tbsp butter (1/2 a stick)
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1 can of biscuits (16.3 oz can, I recommend using Pillsbury Grands Flaky Layers)
- 1/3 cup chopped walnuts (small pieces)
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- zest of one orange (save the orange, we'll use it later)
Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Melt half of your butter and spread it around the bottom and sides of a 9" round cake pan. Next, sprinkle the brown sugar along the bottom, this will help to create a tasty crust on the bottom of your cake. Take your canned biscuit dough, separated into 8 individual biscuits, and place 1 in the middle of the pan. Next, cut each of the remaining biscuits in half, leaving you with 14 circular pieces. Arrange these pieces around the central biscuit, cut sides facing up, pressing them together to form a layer of dough. Melt the remaining 2 tbsp of butter and brush over the tops of the biscuits.
Now, in a bowl, combine the granulated sugar, walnuts, and orange zest together. Make sure you thoroughly mix the zest in with the sugar to impart all of the flavor. Sprinkle the mix over the tops of the biscuits. Place into your oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes, or until the top of the biscuits looks browned.
This cake would be a wonderful treat just as it is, but we decided to turn up the volume a bit more by adding a quick and easy (not to mention tasty) glaze. Here's what you'll need:
- 1/3 cup powdered/confectioner's sugar
- 2 tbsp orange juice (can use more if necessary)
Combine the sugar and juice in a bowl, stirring them together to form a glaze. Slowly add more orange juice to attain the desired consistency (it should easily pour from and coat a spoon, but not be watery). While the cake is still warm, drizzle liberally over the top.
Baking from scratch is a wonderful way to relax and to create some great treats. However, sometimes we just don't have the time to go through all of that effort. As such, a Q&E recipe is just the thing! The other advantage of having such speedy treats is that you can make more of them! As such, there's still a few cakes around here. Care to place an order?
