Hmm. In my group's D&D setting, raising undead or becoming undead intrinsically consigns your soul to Golgotha, the god of undeath. And he wants the entire world to be still and quiet, with all the souls collected and tucked away in his unchanging realm. So yeah, there's a difference, at least in that setting.
