I came up with a picking pattern that sounded good with this tonight so I recorded it :)
This was recorded after about 9 takes with a MXL 603 at the neck joint and a Rode NT1-A on vocals. I EQ'd the guitar by raising the mids and highs a little and dropping the bass and added 2 levels of reverb to both tracks. I think I like the way the reverb sounds. I might use it more.
First thing I have had the chance to record in a while. Man why does life have to throw you curve balls all the time? My last job actually left me too sore to do anything when I got home. Got a new one now though that looks like its gonna maybe be a career and its at a really awesome shop! :3
Word to the wise: Never work for aerotek or nintendo.

Thanks :) I keep playing around with this shit and finding new things every time I do. My latest thing is messing with this multi layered reverb thing were I set a really shallow reverb like a small room pretty loud and then set another one at half that volume or less that is bigger. I try not to mess to much with the frequencies my mics hear though. I like things to sound natural. One thing that really bugs me about modern recordings is how everyone just takes the natural tone of their instruments and just guts them with filters, compression, autotuning and bleh. It sounds like crap and I wish they would stop. Things have a natural beauty and that needs to be a part of the music in my opinion.
Well, there is that and trying to figure out how I should mix these new pencil mics.

You know, I often wonder how much of that "plinkety-plink" comes from the awful recording technology they had or the awful guitars they used. Listening to old folk recordings isn't easy but a lot of times it is interesting to hear the little things like birds in the background and other random noise from the area they were recording in, or to hear the way that songs were originally picked. I have a ton of stuff from this era that in neigh unlistenable but it is a gold mine of interesting things.
Wow, if you somehow managed to hear the original before the Zeppelin version then I applaud you. That takes some luck and talent. The funny thing is that Dylan likes doing this at his shows now and he covers the Zepplin version. It would have been interesting to hear it had he recorded that song in 1963 before he went electric. Thank you btw:)
Oh lol, yeah there is a lot of that sort of confusion in rock and folk music. I mean, how many people know that Bob dylan wrote all along the watchtower, Knock'n on Heavens Door, and Tambourine man? Or that Leonard Cohen wrote hallelujah? Or that it was Jimi Hendrix and not Stephen "Stevie" Ray Vaughan that wrote "Little Wing." Hell, I remember hearing sound Gardens cover over "Black Hole Sun" and all my friends going "wow this is a great new song!"
There are a ton covers that made it way bigger than the originals. I wouldn't feel too bad :)
