This is a pic I've been hoping for since I reread the source material last year. In 2014,
pepeblupew (aka David Hopkins, creator of Jack) wrote Thebe and the Angry Red Eye, a science fiction novella about a group of furry astronauts and their ill-fated attempt to find life on the Jovian moon of Jupiter. (Not a major spoiler -- we know from the beginning that the voyage ended in disaster.) As I've mentioned before, the story hit me right in the feels; I was being treated for non-Hodgkins' lymphoma at the time, and on some subconscious level I must have come to identify with these brave, noble heroes and their struggle to survive. (Let's just say I fared much better than they did.) Hopefully, despite their tragic fate in the story, I just might figure out a way to save them...
This is Hopkins' pic of the crew (and a couple of friends) before they leave Earth. This is the calm before the storm that consumes them all. The characters, left to right: Tout, Jenare, Captain Hawthorne, Thomas (the last survivor of the crew and narrator of the story), Oscar (the tomato plant), Katie (not a crew member, although she's an important presence in the story-- she's Thomas' loving, devoted wife), Dr. Slawvitz, Carl, and Mallory.

This picture and the story it represents reminds me of two things: Null by Elise Heider (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/47116732/) and The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald. All harrowing final diaries of a ship that ran so far off course. While I may need to seek out the story to get a deeper meaning (which is probably gonna be a hard one, considering my very deep emotional connection with spacesuits), it does seem that all three stories have the same message, which is that tomorrow ain't promised, and to live your life in a way that deserves to be remembered...
Good point. However, the breakthrough Thomas makes at the end of "Thebe" won't be remembered because the only witnesses are the two characters directly involved, and neither of them is in a position to tell the people of Earth what happened. However, I'd love to find out what the aftermath of Hildebrand One's voyage is. Pepe, what do you think happened after the events of the story?
While I'm not Pepe, I would imagine any future expeditions to Thebe and Europa would probably discover the grizzly sight, and hopefully any characters around will be more careful this time!
Also, I love the name "Hildebrand One". Reminds me of an old IndyCar driver named JR Hildebrand. Best known for almost winning the Indy 500 back in 2011, he was so close, but on the last turn of the last lap, he smacked the wall. He was fine, but his car was destroyed, and managed to coast across the finish line in second, after Dan Wheldon passed him. Sadly, Dan Wheldon would pass away in another IndyCar crash in Las Vegas, after two cars touched and collected half the field. Another reminder that tomorrow isn't promised.
I know I went a bit off-topic there but I'm a motorsports fan at heart.

"...and hopefully any characters around will be more careful this time!" More careful how? There's nothing the Hildebranders could have done to avoid their fate, because the whole disaster was the Giant's fault (albeit unintentionally). Thomas even says so in his narration. The Giant is the one who needs to be more careful.
