In a serene valley, surrounded by magnolias, stood a small shrine dedicated to a dragon fox. For centuries, villagers had come to pay their respects, leaving offerings of flowers and incense, believing the dragon foxes presence protected their homes and ensured bountiful harvests.
One moonless night, a band of robbers crept into the valley. Drawn by rumors of hidden treasures within the shrine, they broke in, overturning altars and scattering sacred items in their frenzied search. Finding nothing of material value, their anger blazed. One robber, in a fit of spite, set the shrine alight. Flames consumed the wooden structure swiftly, and soon it was reduced to ashes.
As the shrine burned, the dragon fox in an attempt to save the shrine perished. The magnolias that had thrived around the shrine began to wilt and die, their petals falling like tears to the scorched earth.
The next morning, the villagers discovered the devastation. Heartbroken, they gathered in mourning, their whispers of disbelief mingling with the still-smoldering embers. The villagers still sensed the dragon foxes gentle presence among the scorched magnolias.
Determined to restore what had been lost the villagers cleared the ruins and began to rebuild the shrine. They planted new magnolias around the site, whispering prayers for the lost dragon fox.
Months passed, and the new shrine took shape, standing proudly once more among the blooming magnolias. One night, a gentle breeze stirred the air, carrying with it a faint glow. The dragon fox returned in a new form, as a spirit.Scales reflecting the moonlight, body of ash and flame decorated with flaming magnolias and shrine ropes.
The dragon foxes voice echoed on the wind to the villagers “Your love and dedication have rekindled my spirit. I shall watch over you and this valley once more." The villagers rejoiced, and from that day forward, the valley flourished like never before. The magnolias bloomed more vibrantly, their fragrance a constant reminder of the dragon foxes spirit.
