Cockatoos are a HUGE emotional and time investment...definitely not a 'first bird' by any stretch of the imagination. Cockatiels are wonderful little parrots that can be very affectionate...but like all parrots they're more of a companion animal, rather than a pet. I'd reccommend looking for a parrot rescue near you to talk to some bird folks... you may be able to foster a bird for a while to see if it's right for you. :)
Cockatoos can be ENORMOUSLY loud. Ear-shattering. Absolutely atrocious. Cockatiels are in a different genus, but still closely related. They're not nearly as loud, but can still be screechy.
My favorite 'quiet' parrots are bourke's parrots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourke%27s_Parrot
They're the size of budgies but have a mellower disposition. Any of the 'grass parakeet' group are generally quieter...but I'd still recommend visiting a parrot rescue and perhaps fostering before you take in any type of parrot. :)

Alot of parrots are super-cuddly when they're babies... but it's so easy to spoil them. When they mature, they get loud and nippy, and many people aren't ready for that. Some male parrots can be very aggressive when they get hormonal, as can females if they get broody. As long as you educate yourself about the animal you want to bring in your home and know what you might be in for, more power to you. Parrot rescues are overflowing with unwanted birds because people buy them at pet stores and don't know what they're in for once the 'cute baby stage' passes.
I hope I don't seem like I'm trying to spam you or flame you. :D I really do love it when people show an interest in parrots...and they're so smart and fascinating and wonderful--but they're really not 'pets.' It's like having a small, wild, intelligent animal living with you.
*Chuckles* I view all animals as companions. Someone you live with and learn from.. though I do enjoy the affectionate sort which is why I miss my kitties..
I love birds, they are such beautiful animals but I don't know if I could ever take care of one. I would hate to have it caged, and my girlfriend is convinced they are shit factories.

I'm lucky that I can spend alot of time with them... they're really only in the cage when they're sleeping, otherwise they're on top of the cages on play areas or on my shoulder, etc. These birds are so social that it can be hard for them to adapt to busy human lifestyles.
As far as the poop goes... it's really not that bad. Just keep kleenexes handy when they're out and keep the cage paper from getting nasty. If they eat healthy (pellet diets with fresh food on the side) it's almost odorless. I've even met parrots that were practically potty-trained. :)

Fellow cockatiel owner!~
Question--mine is like, practically going bald, I don't know if it's molting or not, but I've owned her for a few years now. Body feathers are getting all weird tiny and seem to vanish. They're not at the bottom of the cage, and the tail, head and wing feathers seem fine. Her activity is normal. Halp? :(
