i got this one out of storage last year and tried to play it but it no longer worked. i can see that the insides are very dusty so i think all i need to do is open it up and clean it. as annoying as it was, i kinda miss having to adjust contrast and angle the screen for the proper lighting; now that's how you play games old-school style.
my first was a clear gameboy pocket. i've also had the original GB Advanced. it went missing at some point (m brother probably sold it like he did many of my other games). i now have 2 used GBA's. have never had one of the SD GBA's, but have seen my friends (didn't like how it fit into my hands, prefer the original body over the clam-shell one).
when it comes to nintendo and modern stuff (starting with the GBA and GameCube) they were first interested in money. that's why you see a bunch of handhelds like the GBA and DS have no back-light at first, but get one and slim down within a year or so. they are notorious for marketing devices that aren't finished and will just have an updated version in a few years (with stuff that they could of put on the first version). that's exactly what the 3DS is but instead of the 3D being something originally intended for the first model, it's just a tacky add-on. really there isn't much difference from the DS and 3DS. the DS was already capable of the great graphics that's on the 3DS but just never decided to push the hardware (the same happened with the GBA which is basically a 32bit system with 16bit games).
it's marketing at it's finest, you could say. it doesn't seem to be the case with stuff like the gameboy models before advanced. there was a different head of the company back then. about part way through the life of the N64 the head of nintendo retired. the new person who took over is the one who decided the company needed a new slogan, one that worked off of the old one but created something more personal. their new goal (and i paraphrase this) was to, "create a safe and friendly gaming environment for kids and family, so that everyone can enjoy the fine products that nintendo has to offer." basically, they took to marketing only family friendly games and dropped anything that could be considered violent or suggestive (which is what drove veteran nintendo fans away). but you can also find i hint of greed in their new approach to the market when you look at the products they marketed and how well they managed to increase sales following the tragedy of the GameCube (i don't even think the system did well in japan). when you look at the games on the systems you can see that right up to the point of the new management there were plenty of 3rd party games and games that were more catered to the main fan base of experienced gamers (aka, 20 year olds and games that weren't watered down). nintendo (and other companies) have now fallen victim to the idea of needing to make games more accessible to people in order to drive profitable revenue in order to continue to produce the high-end games they are making. that's why when you look at games like pokemon, you see that the newer games are easy as hell, and the older games are much harder (nintendo's new management seems to really lean heavily on making games easy for children).
