It was as simple as that. Before he appeared in the Pokemon world, he was a nervous mess, crippled by anxiety, but he had learned how to hide it from other people. Now, in this Mystery Dungeon he accidentally found himself in, he has a valid reason to be scared of what might be around the corner. He takes every precaution, making use of all the materials at his disposal. He will not die here. He has to keep going. He has to live. He has to escape. He has to make it back home.
