Having mech pilots wear fighter pilot kit makes absolute sense, particularly if the setting stays terrestrial.
Some turns a mech can make have harsh g-forces, the kit itself could provide some climate control, and the life preserver outside of it's general water-safety use can also work to keep the head stable during ejection or (if the pilot is clever) if they expect to get rocked around inside their mech.
