The tragic love story of Apollo and Hyacinthus is one of the most well-known pieces of queer mythology, so it was pretty much impossible not to include it. This was additionally inspired by an Irish ballad, titled The Wind That Shakes the Barley. My dad's music library has some Irish songs, and this is one of my favorites. I thought why not have Apollo sing his own version of the song in memory of Hyacinthus? He's the god of music and poetry, so it's perfectly in character for him.
It should be noted that, given the time this was written, Hyacinthus and Apollo's relationship was most likely pederastic, which is obviously a big yikes by today's standards. Here's my solution: Hyacinthus is 18 here; young enough to hopefully be considered an acceptable eromenos (bottom) by ancient Greek standards but old enough to be considered a legal adult by today's standards.
